Terrific Tuesday

24 Tuesday Sep 2013

On a Monday I can still remember the fun I had over the weekend, Wednesday is the middle of the work week, on Thursday I start getting hopeful and on a Friday I can taste the weekend. But what about a Tuesday? It’s so…. just there. Weekend memories are too far away and the upcoming weekend might as well be a year away.

What we need is a bit of colourful inspiration to get us going on a Tuesday, don’t you think? A pretty picture, beautiful scenery or colourful imagery. Yup, that’ll liven up Tuesdays and turn it into a terrific day!

From now on I will go through my photos and Pinterest likes every Tuesday and find us a pretty picture to add colour and joy to the day.

ladies who crochet

It’s not colourful, but I’m sure it made you smile.

Wishing you all a Terrific Tuesday!

Google+ for crocheters

Google+

All the way from America, please welcome my guest blogger Shantier of Tia Rising Out Of The Ashes. She will be telling us all about Google+ and its uses for crocheters. I’m so glad I asked for her help – she obviously knows what she’s talking about! Thank you very much Tia for creating this informative guide for using Google+. You’re a star!

If anyone would like to add me to their circle on Google+ you can find me here. I’d love to hear from you if you’ve signed up for Google+ as a result of this blogpost.

xxx

Hey readers of crochetime! My name is Shantier Franklin. I am a Christian, Army veteran, wife to an Army veteran and mother to 4 children. I am honored to be a guest blogger here to share about Google+ and the crochet community. But first, a bit about myself.

I moved to Charlotte, NC in December 2012 (a few days before Christmas!) from Clarksville, TN. I’ve been crocheting for 6 months now. In late February, my husbands’ grandmother gave me a book, some hooks and some yarn to start crocheting with. At first, I spent my free time practicing stitches until I got comfortable and was pleased with the results. For my first project, I made scarves for my two toddlers and they just adore them. Crochet is soothing and it was an outlet for me to handle my stress that I was experiencing at the time. A couple of weeks later, I started my blog here on WordPress. When my husband left us in April (he suffers from severe PTSD), I thought my whole world was crushed. My faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, crochet and blogging really helped me to deal with the stress of raising two toddlers on my own on a shoestring budget. Now I am making shawls, apparel and accessories for my children and others. I started following blogs about crochet and fiber arts and also ventured into Google+. I’ve had a Google email for years and just started exploring Google+ when I moved here. I found tons of communities that are dedicated to crochet and other fiber arts. I’ve met a lot of experienced crocheters such as Teresa Richardson, the creator of YouTube channels Crochet Geek, Left Hand Crochet and Simple Crochet, who were willing to give great advice and offer suggestions when asked. It is truly a great place to be.

For those who aren’t familiar with Google+, the first thing you need is that you need a Google email account. Some might say, “Why? I already have an email account.” Well, the reason is that Google+, YouTube, Hangouts, etc., are all linked to your Google email account. It uses the same log in information as your email. Any notifications you receive from any one of these services will be sent to that email address. If you have a Google email, and just don’t know how to access these features, I will show you how.

When you log into your email you will see a black band at the top of your email that looks like this:

google 1

The +(your name) is what you click on to get to your personal Google+ account. You can also get to different Google services through this band as well. It will open up a new window (or tab if you have the option when right clicking on it) and you will be able to use several services at once. Though if you sign out of one, you will be signed out of all the services you have opened. Under the More tab, you will find additional services such as these:

google 2

The Even more has all the products provided by Google for web, mobile, media, geo, search, home & office, social and innovation. There are TONS of information and connectivity options available for you to use and apply to your daily living.

If you have never set up your account and need help to do so, this Account Support page should give better insight.

As for the communities on Google+, hover over “Home” and a dropdown menu will pop up. Click on “Communities” and there you can start your search for what you are interested in. For example, you can type in crochet, yarn, knitting, tatting, etc. and communities associated with the terms will populate on the screen.

google 3

If one of your friends invites you to a community, it will show up here as well. Once you join a community, the post will show up in your feed, just like Facebook. Your list of communities will also be in this section as well.

google 4

I will show you all the communities that I am a part of. The list of all the communities joined will show up here.

google 5

The numbers in red denote the amount of new posts there are. Based on your communities, you will also get suggestions as well.

google 6

If you want to post anything for a particular community, or to the public, there are four ways you can do it. You can use the post box on the home screen, on your profile page, in the community itself or through the “Share” button next to your Avatar.

google 7

google 10

Just like Facebook, you can share your photos and comment to other posts. One of my favorite communities is Crochet Along on Google+. Here you can connect with fellow crocheters while working on the project for the month. These crochet alongs, or CAL, is a great way to hone your skills or work on projects that you wouldn’t normally do. Last month, for instance, we created our own pattern and for extra points (the random winner gets a prize) you had to submit the written pattern as well. This was a first for me on both accounts but I managed to make a slouchy hat. It is currently in the works of being tested. This month we are making the Cables & Lace Broomstick Hat which is one of the 8 free patterns on CrochetMe. I haven’t done broomstick lace before and it will be quite a challenge. What is awesome is that the people in the community post progress updates on the monthly CAL when they have hit a snag, have question or just have a general update. I’ve learned so much and have made some great friends here as well.

I hope that this mini-tutorial has helped you navigate Google+ some. My best advice is to play with it until you become familiar. If you want to follow me on the various social media platforms that I use, all my info can be found here. Have an awesome day and God Bless!

Crochet squares and a get together

Do you have any plans for Saturday 9 November 2013? Fancy getting together with a few other crocheters to crochet squares for a charity and/or make up finished squares into blankets? You can also join in a crochet quiz and try your luck with raffle prizes. How do you feel about baking and trying out other’s home bakes? Does this sound like your idea of a Saturday morning?  If so, you’re reading the right blog. I’m arranging all of this, and it’s in aid of Kidney Research UK.

crochet poster purple 9 nov

When:  9 November 2013 from 10:30 to 13:30

Where: The Vera Fletcher Hall 4, Embercourt Road, Thames Ditton, Surrey KT70LQ. More information on the location here. The hall is 50 yards from Thames Ditton station, which is on the South West Trains line between London Waterloo and Hampton Court. Parking is also available in the area around the hall.

Why Kidney Research UK: My husband, John, met someone who suffered from full kidney failure a year ago. Pieter had been on dialysis for 4 years and on the Organ Donor’s List. John was so moved by his suffering and story, that he decided he would donate one of his kidneys to him. Over the months of compatibility tests they became the best of friends, during which time we learnt that they were a very good match. The transplant operation was on 27 November 2012 and went extremely well. John’s donation also made history by being the first directed altruistic organ donation in the UK. It’s now 9 months later and they are both in very good health. Pieter wants to pay it forward and recently became a Board Member of the Kidney Research UK “Making EVERY Kidney Count” appeal, . Pieter has committed to raise £150,000 over three years. I want to help him in the only way I know how: crochet.

How will we help Kidney Research UK?:

1. By crocheting squares to be made into blankets for dialysis patients. Around 20,000 people receive dialysis every year. It’s an extremely unpleasant thing to go through. I’m hoping that lovingly made crochet blankets will help make the dialysis session just a little bit better.

You can start crocheting squares now. Any design of square, as long as it’s close to 15cm squared and you stick to shades of purple and white (as these are the official colours of Kidney Research UK). Please do not use wool as it may shrink or felt when the recipients wash their blankets on a too warm wash. Acrylics and cottons are best. I have purple and white 100% cotton yarn for sale in my Etsy shop that will be excellent for these squares. 25p From each ball sold also goes to Kidney Research UK. You can find the cotton yarn here.

You can make a traditional granny square, or my Granny Square in Bloom square, until it reaches 15cm squared. Step by step photo tutorials for these two patterns can be found here. The pattern has been translated into UK / Australian crochet terms on Spincushions blog here.

If you need more inspiration, Jan Eaton’s book 200 Crochet Blocks (there is a link to the book under the Books I Recommend section on the right) are filled with patterns for squares designed to be 15 cm squared.

Just remember that all squares have to be shades of purple and/or white and no wool.

On the 9th of November we will start crocheting the squares together into blankets, and crochet more squares.  If you can’t attend the get together, please post your squares to me. Squares from all over the world are welcome – the more the merrier.

2. Sales of raffle tickets. On the day we will sell raffle tickets for fun prizes. This blog post gives an idea of what will be raffled and also a sneak peek at the crochet quizz prizes.

3. Sales of coffee & tea. The cake to go with the coffee & tea is up to you….

4. Sales and donation of baked goods. Think of your entry fee to the crochet along, as something baked. Anything along the lines of a cake, cupcakes, muffins or tarts.  Everyone’s baked goods will be sold with the tea & coffee and all proceeds go to Kidney Research UK.  You can price your slices / goods whatever you think it’s worth. If baking isn’t your thing store bought goodies are absolutely fine.

3. Raising awareness of the work that Kidney Research UK does: Kidney Research UK will show a short video and Pieter and John will talk about their experiences in receiving and donating a kidney.

Things for you to do:

  • Please register on this page if you intend to come to our event on 9 November, or if you need my address to post the squares. We need to know how many people to prepare for, so please only answer Yes to the first question if you know for sure that you will be there.
  • Start making purple and/or white squares.
  • Line up the village baker/mother-in-law/neighbour to bake your entry fee, check out the cake aisle of your local Tesco, or browse through your recipe books.
  • Tell your crochet buddies and ask them to send squares or to come along on the 9 November.

crochet demo tudor williams

Aren’t these a lovely bunch of ladies?! They are some of the ladies who attend my crochet demonstration at Tudor Williams on 24 August 2013.  There were around 13 ladies listening to me babble on about my crazy love of crochet! Sweaty palms and shaky fingers much?! I managed to complete one granny square which you can see it on the corner of the table. That granny square was used to teach chain stitches, slip stitches, double crochet, working away a tail end as you crochet and of course the basics of a granny square.

I was on a “hooker high” after two hours of sharing my passion with this group of  lovely ladies. I loved it!

Wishing you all a Terrific Tuesday

Google+ and a new blog address

22 Thursday Aug 2013

Morning all

I hope you are well on this rainy Thursday in London. Hopefully the sun is shining wherever you are.

This is just a quick post to tell you that I have signed up for Google+. There is a green Google+ icon on the right of the blog that you can click on to go to my profile or you can click here. I read yesterday that Google+ is the fastest growing new social media platform. Facebook took 4 years to get 60 million users and Google+ managed to achieve his within it’s first year. It’s THE place to be so I’m giving it a go. (The term “keeping up with the Jones’s” springs to mind.) Google+ works with Circles (groups of contacts). You can therefore separate your friends from your family from your blog buddies. I only have one Circle: Fellow crochet lovers. Obviously. I only signed up to Google+ this morning so there’s not a lot going on yet. If more of my blog readers follow me on Google+, and I them, I’m sure it can become a great social media platform for us all to connect.

The other bit of news is that my blog address has changed from crochetime.wordpress.com, to crochetime.net. You’ll still reach my blog if you follow the .wordpress.com address so there’s nothing for you to do. If you follow my blog by email you would have seen a strange post with a Follow me on Bloglovin link. That was just me changing Bloglovin from the wordpress.com address to the .net address.

That’s all folks.

I hope you have a hooktastic day!

Loveknitting

One of my favourite online yarn shops is up for two awards in the British Knitting Awards. Knitting! On a crochet blog! How very dare you!

Now, now. Play nice. We’re all yarn loving crafters, finding immense pleasure in our chosen yarny activities. (Attic24 is up for best blog so eventhough it’s the Knitting Awards, crochet is obviously welcome.) It is in this spirit of inclusiveness that I was hoping you would cast your vote here.

I’ve placed my vote for Loveknitting as the Best Online Store and the Best Website. (There’s that “knitting” on a crochet blog thing again. Share the love.)

I honestly do love Loveknitting. They have a super easy website to use, regular newsletter with great discounts (at the moment all Cotton, Silk and Bamboo is discounted by 10% with discount code 10CSB), purchases are lovingly wrapped which make you feel like you’ve bought from a small Indie yarn seller and they’re just generally a nice bunch of people.

loveknitting logo

Of course you can vote for whomever you want and even add a designer / blog / website under the “other” option for each category.

Voting closes on 20 September and you stand the chance to win a UK mini break worth £500 sponsored by Great Little Breaks. Wouldn’t it be nice if one of my blog readers win the mini break!

Go on, get voting.
