Granny Square In Bloom goes Down Under

Do you remember this three dimensional flower square that I designed? I called it Granny Square in Bloom and used it in a cushion for my friend.

Granny square in bloom

Ring a bell? Well, this free pattern has been translated from the US crochet terms into UK and Australian terms by Shelley Husband of Spincushions! Shelley lives in South West Victoria, Australia and runs a weekly crochetalong called In A Spin.  She asked for my permission to use my pattern as square 45 for the In A Spin CAL. Of course I said yes! Shelly’s CAL has a Ravelry group and Flickr group. I had a great time flicking through all the photos of the squares. There are some pretty amazing blankets in the making over in Oz!

I asked Shelley to tell me more about herself and her crochetalong. Here’s what she said:

Early 2012, I decided to teach myself to crochet by doing a weekly CAL as run by a craft chain store here in Australia. I had so much fun doing it over the 25 weeks, I was a bit lost when it was finished. I decided to run my own CAL to take it’s place so I could continue to learn as much as I could. A lot of folks who did the same one have also tagged along on to the In a Spin CAL. As most are here in Australia, I have been asking permission from pattern designers to translate their patterns into UK terms. Its been great working with so many lovely folks. We are up to our 47th pattern now 🙂

I’ve been challenging CAL participants with some pretty tricky stuff, as well as some just beautiful patterns. We are coming close to the end of the project now – we’ll be done before Xmas 🙂

It’s been a great learning experience. I am so much more knowledgeable about this crochet thing 🙂 I still have heaps to learn.

I’ve begun to design my own patterns now and I just love sitting down with my fave hook and ball of yarn and seeing what comes out.

I feel very honoured that my pattern was chosen for this fun crochetalong. Shelley did me a huge favour by translating the pattern in to UK / Austrlian terms too! If you click here you will be taken to Shelley’s post entitled “In A Spin Week 45” and see the translated pattern. The Ravelry pattern page has also been updated to include Shelley’s translation.

If you are making Granny Square in Bloom squares in purple and white for the Crochet for Kidney Research UK event, Shelley’s translation will be very helpful to you.

I wish Shelley and her crochetalongers (is that a word?) all the best for their big project. I take my hat off to anyone that can stick to a crochetalong that runs for a whole year with a new square every week!

Thanks again Shelley for including my square in your crochetalong.

200 crochet blocks, crochet along

Here are my blocks ten to 15 of Rachell’s 200 Blocks Crochet Along. You will see I only have five blocks instead of six. That’s because I didn’t make block no. 11: Baby Blocks. For the life of me I just couldn’t figure out how to carry the yarn and I got confused with which SC counted as the first stitch of the new colour. I really tried, but then I thought &%$*% it. I can always repeat one of the other block designs and seen in the big scheme of things, who cares whether I can make Baby Blocks or not (I certainly don’t).

So here are blocks 10, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16.

My least favourite block is Fine Lines. Hubby said it reminds him of a banana peel. I kinda see where he gets that.

Circle in a Square is definitely my favourite. I used it when I made cushions for my brother, and also for my first yarnbomb.  For the yarnbomb I only did rounds 1 to 5 and it still looked great. It also works up really quick.

200 crochet blocks, crochet along, Polamatic

Ooo, this post has been a long time coming! Since 1 September in fact. Bad Natasja! But in my defence, I was entertaining my dear Dad on his visit to my neck of the woods, and enjoying it so much that I didn’t even have any time to blog. I’m sure you’ll understand.  (It’s a good sign when real life takes precedence over blog life don’t you think?)

Anyway, here’s what I want to show you. Blocks 1 to 9 of the 200 Crochet Blocks with Rachell Crochet Along. We’re making two to three blocks per week, starting on 1 September, so seeing as we’re in week four I should have at least eight blocks. I’ve got nine to show you and two more at home that I haven’t photographed yet. I’m back on track baby!

So here are my nine blocks. They are all done in Stylecraft Special DK with a 4 mm crochet hook.

These blocks have already been wet blocked, but not very successfully… That’s the thing with acrylic yarn – it doesn’t block as easily as natural fibres. At least the blocks are all 15cm x 15cm, just a bit wobbly around the edges. Hopefully they will straighten up nicely when sewed together. I hope…. if not, I’ll just wet block them again en masse.

My favourites are Popcorn Flower and the Corner Granny. I don’t like Twin Stripes and Triangle Stripes very much, but I’m glad I made them. This CAL is forcing me to make things that I wouldn’t normally be drawn to, which is a good thing.

If you’re taking part in the CAL, how far along are you? Do you have a favourite square?

Are you taking part in The Making Spot crochet along? I’m so taking part, I’m done! Over the Bank Holiday weekend I finished the bracelet and I really, really, really like it. Thank you to The Making Spot for introducing me to tiny crochet hooks and crochet thread!

The nitty gritty of my bracelet:

  • The bracelet design I chose from the four given in the pattern, is Bracelet with Crocheted Balls. You can find the pattern on the Coats Crafts UK website here.
  • I used Aida 10 crochet thread in silver grey and a 1.5 mm crochet hook
  • In the end I didn’t use the monofilament thread and diamante clasp you can see in this post, but went for my first choice of 3 mm silver ribbon to thread the balls and glass beads.

Not only is The Making Spot hosting the crochet along, you can also take part in The Big Flower Swap:

If you’re not content with sharing a photo of your finished crochet online, why not send it into us here at Crochet Along HQ? We’ll send you someone else’s flower so you will receive some pretty petals in the post! Before the swap ends and we post back your blooms, we’ll photograph everyone’s flowers in a DIY Crochet Flower garden.

To join in the Big Flower Swap: crochet one or several flowers from the free pattern, and post them (along with a stamped, self-addressed envelope) to: Crochet Along, The Making Spot, Future Publishing, Bath BA1 2BW, England.

I made the big flower from the necklace pattern and posted it this morning.  It would be great if one of my blog readers receive my flower, and even greater if I receive one of your flowers!

So here is my bracelet for the crochet along, and flower for The Big Flower Swap.  It’s been an education working with crochet thread and a small hook, and I love it!  (I loved it so much I already have a plan to crochet rosebud earrings to match my bracelet. )

The crochet along runs until the 28th of September, so you still have loads of time to crochet a bracelet and/or necklace and flower(s) for the swap.

One CAL done, another one to start: The theme for Rachell’s crochet along (working our way through Jan Eaton’s 200 Crochet Blocks book) has been decided on: Cottage Garden.  I’m so happy! My stash is filled with cottage garden shades! Starting 1 September we are making block no. 1 and no. 2 from the book. All the information about this CAL is on Rachell’s blog.

So many things to get my hooks into! Love it!

I’m taking part in The Making Spot’s crochet along. Have you heard about it? It sounds like so much fun. Read all about it on their blog, here.

I’m making the crochet ball bracelet. As you can see, I have everything I need, plus a bit more (more beads than I will need and a ribbon + monofilament option for stringing the balls & beads). For creative juices to flow I need to give myself options. Too much of a good thing is, on my blog at least, a very good thing.

Did you see how tiny that 1.5 mm hook is?!!! A bit daunting but hey-ho, it’s good to hook outside your comfort zone now and then. I can’t hook everything with my favourite 4 mm hook. Or can I….. if I like the bracelet I may just make another one in DK and my 4 mm hook.

Geez I haven’t even put hook to thread yet on this one and already I’m planning the next! Steady now *said in a Churchill dog voice*
