kidney donation, kidney transplant

justgivingposter

If you are a regular follower of this blog you may recall me telling you that a year ago my husband, John, met someone who suffered from full kidney failure. Pieter had been on dialysis for 4 years and on the Organ Donor’s List. John was so moved by his suffering and story, that he decided to donate one of his kidneys to him. Over the months of compatibility tests they became the best of friends, during which time we learnt that they were a very good match. The transplant operation was on 27 November 2012 and went extremely well. John’s donation also made history by being the first directed altruistic organ donation in the UK.

It’s now 7 months later and they are both in very good health. Pieter wants to pay it forward and has recently joined the Kidney Research UK Development Board who are actively organising events to help raise much needed funds to combat kidney disease, and to raise awareness. Pieter’s goal is to raise at least £25,000 in 3 years, and we’ve offered to help. John and Pieter also hope to encourage altruists to seriously consider saving a life by donating a kidney (or at least to join the organ donors register) by documenting every step of the kidney donation and transplant journey on their  blog.

On Sunday 14 July Pieter, Pieter’s wife Lizelle, their dog Trinity, John and I will be taking part in the London Bridges Walk in aid of Kidney Research UK. Although anyone can enter, many of the participants will have varying stages of kidney disease / failure or be someone that has donated a kidney. I will be extremely grateful if you would be kind enough help us support this very worthy cause by sponsoring us with donations, however small.

As you can see from the poster, you can donate by texting UKGO88 £5 to 70070, or by visiting Pieter’s justgiving page www.justgiving.com/229days

 ******

To put things into perspective, results from a survey, carried out by Usurv, indicate that while 87 per cent of people in the UK would accept a transplant if told they needed one, only one in three are actually on the organ donor register.

Around 50,000 people in the UK require some form of ongoing treatment for kidney failure, of which approximately 7,000 are currently waiting for a kidney transplant – accounting for 90 per cent of all patients on the NHS’s transplant waiting list.

With more than three million people in the UK at risk from kidney disease and an aging population expected to further increase demand for donor organs in years to come, Kidney Research UK fears demand for organs will continue to outstrip supply – placing the lives of more and more kidney patients at risk.

Your support will mean a lot to us and to Kidney Research UK.

Japanese crochet, wearable crochet

20130705-123621.jpg

In between working on photo tutorials and designing motifs I’ve been hooking away on my Japanese V-neck. The one on the cover of this book.

I really do love this and can’t wait for it to be finished.

My first public appearance

Today I can tell you about something that has been the highlight of my crocheting “career” thus far: I did a crochet demonstration at a local department store on Saturday! I didn’t want to say anything before the event as I didn’t know what to expect (or if anyone would turn up), but it went so well and people did arrive!

My “public appearance” took place at Tudor Williams in New Malden. I have a soft spot in my heart for Tudor Williams. It was there that I bought my first Pony 4 mm crochet hook and my first ball of Stylecraft Special DK on that fateful Saturday in August 2009 when I decided I wanted to learn to crochet. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that crochet would become such a big part of my life when I walked into the haberdashery department four years ago. I certainly didn’t think that I would return one day to give a demonstration on granny squares in that same department, or that the store manager, Peter, would announce my demonstration as “Our crochet queen, Natasja, will be giving a crochet demonstration…..” Hahahahaha for crochet queen! Very apt considering my surname is King 🙂

20130629-142527.jpg

In the two hours that I was there, I taught three ladies how to crochet and chatted with another three or four customers and the haberdashery staff about crochet in general. I enjoyed every minute! I managed to be calm enough so that I could focus my mind and just be in the moment, taking my queues from the “students”. The teaching part was kinda huge for me. I’ve never taught anyone to crochet. I just told myself to take it slow and I made sure that the ladies took away a copy of my granny square photo tutorial, and photocopied pages from Simply Crochet magazine’s beginners guide on how to crochet. That way I knew that even if I messed up, or the student forgot everything I said, they will have something to refer back to. I repeated John’s supportive words “You’ve got this. Crochet is your thing.” to myself a couple of times too.

The best bit was when Tina arrived….. Tina came to the haberdashery department to buy a crochet hook for a friend, after having spent a morning in the coffee shop trying to figure out how to make a granny square. Imagine her surprise when she walks into the haberdashery department only to find me sitting there, ready to demonstrate granny squares! It was such an amazing serendipitous stroke of luck, we were both sooo happy! Tina showed me the granny square she had been working on. I pointed out the tiny mistakes and used her square to teach her further. She, and the other two ladies I had seen that morning, were extremely fast learners. When it was time for Tina to leave she actually told the cashier she thinks she is “hooked on crochet” now and that I was a great teacher. Wow! That made my day!!!

I hope Tudor Williams will have me back for more crochet demonstrations. I enjoyed myself thoroughly and it gave me a taste of what I would love to do full time.

If any of the ladies that I spoke to on Saturday is reading this, please let me know how you are getting on with your granny squares. I’d love to hear from you!

Terrific Tuesday

On a Monday I can still remember the fun I had over the weekend, Wednesday is the middle of the work week, on Thursday I start getting hopeful and on a Friday I can taste the weekend. But what about a Tuesday? It’s so…. just there. Weekend memories are too far away and the upcoming weekend might as well be a year away.

What we need is a bit of colourful inspiration to get us going on a Tuesday, don’t you think? A pretty picture, beautiful scenery or colourful imagery. Yup, that’ll liven up Tuesdays and turn it into a terrific day!

From now on I will go through my photos and Pinterest likes every Tuesday and find us a pretty picture to add colour and joy to the day.

Wishing you all a Terrific Tuesday.

crochet, Rubiks Cube, Yarnbomb

If you want to get in on some yarnbombing action, why not crochet squares for Crochet Grenade‘s Rubiks Cube Park yarnbomb?

All the details are on the Facebook Event page here, or you can read it below. I copy & pasted it straight from the page:

“INTERNATIONAL YARNBOMB PROJECT: “RUBIKS CUBE PARK” DEADLINE FOR SQUARES: JULY 1ST. I will need 2,700 crocheted squares and ANYONE ANYWHERE can help by spreading the word, mailing in squares, coming to meet ups, or even installing. This yarn bomb installation will be on the weekend of Comic-Con San Diego. For those of you not familiar with Comic-Con, it is a four-day event held yearly in San Diego, CA celebrating comic books, science fiction/fantasy and film/television, pop culture, horror, animation, anim…e, manga, toys, collectible card games, video games, webcomics, and fantasy novels. It’s the ultimate geek event and this convention is the largest of its kind in the US with over 130,000 attendees. (http://www.comic-con.org/) In the park across the street from the convention center and the event, there are 60 cement cubes in Children’s Park. I will be joining all of your squares together to create Rubiks cubes.  The plan is to install it “guerrilla style” across the street from the convention center, in the middle of downtown San Diego. Each Rubiks Cube will be a different pattern to create a visually abstract appearance. To create these Rubiks cubes I will need 45 sqaures per cube. Although you do not need to use Red Heart yarn, I ask that you try to match as closely as possible to the colors listed. ANY BRAND of worsted acrylic yarn can be used as long as the colors match to keep it all cohesive. I would love for people to volunteer to make a cube!! I will attach a business card with “DONATED BY ___” on the cube(s) that you make. There are 45 squares to a cube and the pattern is very simple!

Link to color palette here.

YARN: RED HEART RED: Hot Red ID# 0390 (Super Saver) YELLOW: Bright Yellow ID# 0324 (Super Saver) ORANGE: Pumpkin ID# 0254 (Super Saver) GREEN: Paddy Green ID# 0368 (Super Saver) BLUE: Blue ID# 0886 (Super Saver) WHITE: White ID# 0311 (Super Saver)

For those not familiar with crochet or reading crochet patterns, I created a video explaining how to make the square needed for this project. http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=US&hl=en&client=mv-google&v=wXnK3V2zSzA&nomobile=1

CROCHET SQUARE PATTERN Hook: I

Form a magic ring OR ch 6 and join with SL ST

Round 1: Ch 3, *3 DC in ring, TR in ring, * repeat from * three more times, join with SL ST to the top of Ch 3

Round 2: Ch 3, * DC in each DC to TR, ( 2 DC, TR, 2 DC) in TR. Repeat from * three more times, join with SL ST to top of Ch 3

Repeat Rnd 2 until square reaches 7.5 inches (6 rounds) Finish off.  Weaving ends optional.

SQUARES CAN BE MAILED TO: Crochet Grenade PO BOX 17188 San Diego CA 92177-7188. I will post pictures of submissions to the event page so that everyone gets credit for what they send.

List of all submissions sent by participants: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ApDRRWFRF1SndHl5SXpod2E3VnQwaTd5czhlaFlTZXc#gid=0

The following link is to see the squares that are still needed. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0ApDRRWFRF1SndDBfT0xmTnVsVkdTV0RMUVljQjVpOVE#gid=0”

I am making nine white squares for this great yarnbomb, thereby covering one side of one rubiks cube. I thought I’d do white as that’s the safest colour if you don’t have access to Red Heart Super Saver yarn. Did you see how many squares are needed? Two Thousand Seven Hundred!!!  This is a huge project, so if you have a minute to spare please do get involved.

crochet art, Kaffe Fassett

A Life In Colour is the title of the Fashion and Textile Museum‘s showcase on the life and work of Kaffe Fassett. Rachel of The Little Room of Rachell and I went to see it on Saturday morning. It was pure colour overload!

Needless to say I took loads of photos. I suggest you click on the photos in the Gallery to see the bigger version.

This living room scene is too beautiful to be part of the photo gallery above. I would have loved to sit on that needlepoint chair! can you imagine how inspiring it would be to do your crochet day in and day out on this chair?! I’d never want to get up from it.

The exhibition was exactly as Good Housekeeping said: ‘The show feels more like an elaborate stage set or opulent living room than a museum display. …This is an exhibition put together with an eye for drama, colour, pattern and texture – a visual feast served up with a large helping of inspiration. … You’ll come away full of ideas, and itching to pick up a needle or a paintbrush.’

If you are in London, do pop in. The show is running until 29 June 2013. You can even attend “An evening with Kaffe Fassett” on the 27th June which includes a lecture by the man himself, a drink, book signing, and entry to the exhibition.

On a final note, look what I saw on the Rowan Yarns Facebook page. This is the greatest news yet! Kaffe has conquered almost all the yarn and textile crafts, apart from crochet. Until now…

I think I could live with the skirt, but it’s the head thing (could it be a crochet interpretation of a veil?) and bows that really push it over the Damn Ugly edge for me. At least the shoes are nice. But shoes do not a wedding dress maketh.

Proof that vintage, even Yves Saint Laurent vintage from 1965, is not always better.

How to add social media icons to your WordPress blog

Blogging

The blog title says it all doesn’t it? This post is a direct result of The List post, but with one small change. In stead of crocheting social media icons* I decided to go the easy route and just download them from a website. Job done!

It was Hannah, of Not Your Average Crochet, that actually inspired this. She has the cutest little social media icons on your blog! You can read her blog post about these cuties here. If you read the comments to that post, you’ll see my comment and her response: she got them by searching Google for “free social media icons”. I did the same, but I searched on Pinterest…. As you can image there were loads! So many choices! In the end I settled for these icons inspired by Pantone Fall 2012 colours.

Now the question, is how do I get the icons onto my blog? For that you can follow the very clear instructions by the Geek Fairy in this post. (It’s specifically for WordPress users, so sorry Blogger bloggers I don’t know how you guys get icons onto your blog.)

I followed the Geek Fairy instructions to the letter, yet my icons wouldn’t resize to a smaller than 100 x 100 size. I wanted mine to be about half the original size, so I typed in 50 x 50 in the Advanced settings fields as the fairy said I should, and I could see those dimensions in the text that I pasted into HTML Widget, yet it still showed up as the original size. Very strange indeed.

Thankfully I got around the problem by changing the image size in the Image Library (as opposed to changing the size in the draft post.) Here’s how I did it:

1. Go to the Media Library and find the social media icon. If you hover under PNG, the Edit field will appear. Click on Edit

Media Library

2. Once you’re in the Edit option for the image, click Edit Image:Media Library edit

3. Now you can scale the image:

Media Library scale

4.  Type in your desired size. I chose 50 x 50. Click on Scale:Media Library scale size

Save the change and do it for all your icons.

Once you are happy with the size, insert these images into a draft post as the Geek Fairy says you should and follow her instructions for adding the links.

That’s it. You may not even need to change the size in the Image Library. Maybe my WordPress theme is just dodgy, or I was doing something wrong. Who knows. Either way, it really is very easy to add social media icons to your WordPress widget sidebar. It’s so much neater too, don’t you think?

*I you want to crochet social media icons, you can use the patterns I found on the tugboatyarning website here and here. The same principals would apply as described above: Photograph the crocheted icons, upload them to the image library, change the size, use them in a draft blog post, add the links and past the text of the draft post into a text widget for your sidebar.
