A tight bargain

24 Wednesday Aug 2011

By now you probably know that I am quite a fan of colour *understatement*, especially when it comes to footwear.

I am also a fan of a good bargain, so when I went to Boots at lunchtime and saw marked down opaque tights I was thrilled. I bought four pairs of opaque tights and one pair of knee-highs. The black knee-highs are a bit too practical for my standards, but they are lovely and patterned which takes it up a notch. I especially love the Mulberry ones and just know I’ll be needing two pairs this winter. The best bit – the opaques were only 45p each (down from £4) and the knee-highs 35p (down from £1.35). Brilliant!!!!!

Now tell me how sad am I that I will unpack my lunchtime shopping to take a photo in an empty office and then do a blog entry about it?! Well, maybe not sad just very excitable and lover of the small things in life.  (At least, that’s what I keep telling myself.)

Photo challenge – Day 24

The theme for today is “a smile”.

I really love this photo of myself and my Dad taken in Cape Town, South Africa. If you know my Dad, you’ll know that his personality is very similar to a M&M – hard candy shell outside but soft and sweet inside. With his beard and constant frown lines (even when he’s not frowing) he can look very intimidating and grumpy, so a smile like this really lights up his face.  I just love it.

Oh, and I love the pens in his shirt pocket. Ever so practical. Hey, you never know when you might need a pen, even at the beach….

Keep on smiling Dad!

I adore crochet. I adore flowers. I adore bright colours. Ergo I totally freaked out when I saw the cover of Mollie Makes issue 3!

Luckily I am already subscribed to this fantastic magazine so I have the pattern for the flowers. However…. if you don’t have Mollie Makes magazine lying around, but would love to put hook to wool for one of these lovely flowers designed by Annie of AnnieDesign, you can visit The Guardian’s website for the pattern tutorial! How cool is that?! Just visit The Guardian’s site here.

Spreading the crochet love, one link at a time.

This morning I saw I love pom-poms’s post about the amazing Nona Pepa rug. It’s the first time I’ve seen this amazing flowery rug by Natalie Pepe.  Can you imagine how many hours must have gone into making and attaching all those tiny flowers?!

This rug reminded me of another rug I saw on Pinterest. This time it’s a granny square rug by Kasthall called Karin. Here the grannies are printed on the wool of the rug. Far less work  than crocheting every granny square, and just as amazingly beautiful. Isn’t it amazing?!  It’s named after the designer’s grandmother who loved to crochet.

Lately I’ve also been seeing a lot of big doilie style crochet rugs. If I had a bigger house I would definitely make one. In ihanitse’s Etsy shop (ihanitse is Finnish for “made by myself”) you can buy ready made rugs, or buy the pattern from the designer to tackle your own – using a size 6 hook and super chunky yarn. Isn’t it just beautiful?!

Now that I lay down the groundwork (see what I did there?) High Five to walking on crochet!!

The theme for today is “what I read”, so here are the three books I’m reading, or at least planning to read.

Red Lotus is from the local library (lovely story), How to Make Money Using Etsy which is an amazingly helpful book, and Dead Men Don’t Crochet that my Mom sent me as a birthday present. I am yet to start reading this one, but I know I’ll love it because I loved Hooked on Murder. If you’re into crochet you’ve got to read these!!
