Watch Me Crochet Wednesday

This is nothing fancy; just a short video of me crocheting whatever I’m working on at the moment. I hope you like it.

This video shows me crocheting:

  • the second row of a chevron scarf,
  • in (US) half double crochet / (UK) half treble crochet,
  • with a 3.5 mm crochet hook,
  • using Vinnis Nikkim cotton in shade Natural

The video was taken on Saturday, late afternoon in my living room. I cut my finger, hence the green (embracing my inner child) band-aid. Not even a band-aid can stop me crocheting, I just adjust and adapt. That’s the way of the hooker.

Terrific Tuesday

On a Monday I can still remember the fun I had over the weekend, Wednesday is the middle of the work week, on Thursday I start getting hopeful and on a Friday I can taste the weekend. But what about a Tuesday? It’s so…. just there. Weekend memories are too far away and the upcoming weekend might as well be a year away.

What we need is a bit of colourful inspiration to get us going on a Tuesday, don’t you think? A pretty picture, beautiful scenery or colourful imagery. Yup, that’ll liven up Tuesdays and turn it into a terrific day!

From now on I will go through my photos and Pinterest likes every Tuesday and find us a pretty picture to add colour and joy to the day.

Crochet squares and a get together

Tags

, , , , ,

Do you have any plans for Saturday 9 November 2013? Fancy getting together with a few other crocheters to crochet squares for a charity and/or make up finished squares into blankets? You can also join in a crochet quiz and try your luck with raffle prizes. How do you feel about baking and trying out other’s home bakes? Does this sound like your idea of a Saturday morning?  If so, you’re reading the right blog. I’m arranging all of this, and it’s in aid of Kidney Research UK.

When:  9 November 2013 from 10:30 to 13:30

Where: The Vera Fletcher Hall 4, Embercourt Road, Thames Ditton, Surrey KT70LQ. More information on the location here. The hall is 50 yards from Thames Ditton station, which is on the South West Trains line between London Waterloo and Hampton Court. Parking is also available in the area around the hall.

Why Kidney Research UK: My husband, John, met someone who suffered from full kidney failure a year ago. Pieter had been on dialysis for 4 years and on the Organ Donor’s List. John was so moved by his suffering and story, that he decided he would donate one of his kidneys to him. Over the months of compatibility tests they became the best of friends, during which time we learnt that they were a very good match. The transplant operation was on 27 November 2012 and went extremely well. John’s donation also made history by being the first directed altruistic organ donation in the UK. It’s now 9 months later and they are both in very good health. Pieter wants to pay it forward and recently became a Board Member of the Kidney Research UK “Making EVERY Kidney Count” appeal, . Pieter has committed to raise £150,000 over three years. I want to help him in the only way I know how: crochet.

How will we help Kidney Research UK?:

1. By crocheting squares to be made into blankets for dialysis patients. Around 20,000 people receive dialysis every year. It’s an extremely unpleasant thing to go through. I’m hoping that lovingly made crochet blankets will help make the dialysis session just a little bit better.

You can start crocheting squares now. Any design of square, as long as it’s close to 15cm squared and you stick to shades of purple and white (as these are the official colours of Kidney Research UK). Please do not use wool as it may shrink or felt when the recipients wash their blankets on a too warm wash. Acrylics and cottons are best. I have purple and white 100% cotton yarn for sale in my Etsy shop that will be excellent for these squares. 25p From each ball sold also goes to Kidney Research UK. You can find the cotton yarn here.

You can make a traditional granny square, or my Granny Square in Bloom square, until it reaches 15cm squared. Step by step photo tutorials for these two patterns can be found here. The pattern has been translated into UK / Australian crochet terms on Spincushions blog here.

If you need more inspiration, Jan Eaton’s book 200 Crochet Blocks (there is a link to the book under the Books I Recommend section on the right) are filled with patterns for squares designed to be 15 cm squared.

Just remember that all squares have to be shades of purple and/or white and no wool.

On the 9th of November we will start crocheting the squares together into blankets, and crochet more squares.  If you can’t attend the get together, please post your squares to me. Squares from all over the world are welcome – the more the merrier.

2. Sales of raffle tickets. On the day we will sell raffle tickets for fun prizes. This blog post gives an idea of what will be raffled and also a sneak peek at the crochet quizz prizes.

3. Sales of coffee & tea. The cake to go with the coffee & tea is up to you….

4. Sales and donation of baked goods. Think of your entry fee to the crochet along, as something baked. Anything along the lines of a cake, cupcakes, muffins or tarts.  Everyone’s baked goods will be sold with the tea & coffee and all proceeds go to Kidney Research UK.  You can price your slices / goods whatever you think it’s worth. If baking isn’t your thing store bought goodies are absolutely fine.

3. Raising awareness of the work that Kidney Research UK does: Kidney Research UK will show a short video and Pieter and John will talk about their experiences in receiving and donating a kidney.

Things for you to do:

  • Please register on this page if you intend to come to our event on 9 November, or if you need my address to post the squares. We need to know how many people to prepare for, so please only answer Yes to the first question if you know for sure that you will be there.
  • Start making purple and/or white squares.
  • Line up the village baker/mother-in-law/neighbour to bake your entry fee, check out the cake aisle of your local Tesco, or browse through your recipe books.
  • Tell your crochet buddies and ask them to send squares or to come along on the 9 November.

Watch Me Crochet Wednesday

Today is the first post in my new weekly series: Watch Me Crochet Wednesdays.

I’m not doing a fancy instructional crochet video; just a short video of me crocheting whatever I’m working on at the moment. I hope you like it.

This video shows me crocheting:

  • around a polystyrene sphere in an attempt to make a balloon*,
  • in (US) half double crochet / (UK) half treble crochet,
  • with a 6 mm crochet hook,
  • using Wendy Supreme Cotton Chunky in shade no 1420 (white).

The video was taken on the Bank Holiday Monday. We had amazing weather so I’m seated outside at the patio table, crocheting al fresco. On a sunny weekend it feels wrong to sit on the livingroom couch with my crochet. A slight breeze, warmth and the shade of our patio umbrella really gets my hooky vibes going. Do you like to crochet outside?

*The balloon one of three I have to make for a custom order I received on Etsy two weeks ago. I will share more about this interesting project later.

crochet demo tudor williams

Aren’t these a lovely bunch of ladies?! They are some of the ladies who attend my crochet demonstration at Tudor Williams on 24 August 2013.  There were around 13 ladies listening to me babble on about my crazy love of crochet! Sweaty palms and shaky fingers much?! I managed to complete one granny square which you can see it on the corner of the table. That granny square was used to teach chain stitches, slip stitches, double crochet, working away a tail end as you crochet and of course the basics of a granny square.

I was on a “hooker high” after two hours of sharing my passion with this group of  lovely ladies. I loved it!

Wishing you all a Terrific Tuesday

Crochet on TV (Taxi)

Tags

, , ,

Yesterday I received an email from Cade J. Campbell of Cleburne, Texas alerting me to another Roseanne style granny square afghan on a TV show:  the crochet afghan on Zena’s parents couch in Season 2 of Taxi, episode 13 Louie Meets the Folks.

I’ve never seen the TV show Taxi, but luckily I could watch Episode 13 of Season two on this website.  (A lot of website don’t want to play the clip as I am located outside of the US, but this one does.)

Most of this episode is set in the living room where the granny square afghan is thrown over the back of the couch. It really is a beautiful multi coloured granny square. It livens up the scenes with its bright mix of colours. I love it! I’m so glad Cade told me about it! Cade also very kindly sent me a couple of screenshot. Thanks Cade!

Taxi crochet afghan on couch

TAXI_Roseanne_Afghan_01

TAXI_Roseanne_Afghan_03

To recreate this granny square afghan you would need 4-round traditional granny squares in a mix of bright colours. I think the square are arranged in 9 rows of 14 squares each, so that would be a total of 126 granny squares.

The squares look quite big for 4-rounds granny squares, so I think they used a Chunky yarn.

What makes this afghan different to, for instance, the Roseanne crochet afghan is the way the squares are joined. In the Roseanne blanket the black yarn was used as the last round of each square. From what I can see the black yarn in the Taxi afghan was only used to join the squares. I think they did a slip stitch through the chain 1 space of both squares, then chained 3 and did a slip stitch through the chain 1 space of both squares again and so on. Where four squares connect, the centre looks quite dark. This would happen when there is a slip stitch in each corner shell of the four squares – the four slip stitches, seen together, will make a tiny black square.  The border for the afghan looks like a row of shells, done in dark green.

You can have a look at the Photo Tutorials tab of this blog to download a pdf document that shows you step by step how to make a multicoloured granny square.

Don’t you think it’s amazing what a difference the way you join granny squares, can make to the overall look of an afghan or blanket? The Roseanne and Taxi couch afghans are both done in traditional granny squares, both in bright colours arranged in no particular order and in both blankets the squares are framed in black – it’s just the amount of black that differs and yet the two blankets look totally different.  And this is why I love granny squares – the possibilities are endless!

Google+ and a new blog address

Morning all

I hope you are well on this rainy Thursday in London. Hopefully the sun is shining wherever you are.

This is just a quick post to tell you that I have signed up for Google+. There is a green Google+ icon on the right of the blog that you can click on to go to my profile or you can click here. I read yesterday that Google+ is the fastest growing new social media platform. Facebook took 4 years to get 60 million users and Google+ managed to achieve his within it’s first year. It’s THE place to be so I’m giving it a go. (The term “keeping up with the Jones’s” springs to mind.) Google+ works with Circles (groups of contacts). You can therefore separate your friends from your family from your blog buddies. I only have one Circle: Fellow crochet lovers. Obviously. I only signed up to Google+ this morning so there’s not a lot going on yet. If more of my blog readers follow me on Google+, and I them, I’m sure it can become a great social media platform for us all to connect.

The other bit of news is that my blog address has changed from crochetime.wordpress.com, to crochetime.net. You’ll still reach my blog if you follow the .wordpress.com address so there’s nothing for you to do. If you follow my blog by email you would have seen a strange post with a Follow me on Bloglovin link. That was just me changing Bloglovin from the wordpress.com address to the .net address.

That’s all folks.

I hope you have a hooktastic day!

Mabel the pug and her crochet hat

crochet pug hat

Mabel is the spokesPug for Three‘s Pug321 campaign.  Only a pug can carrry off a crocheted birthday cake hat and gangster chain and still look this cute – choosing Mabel was perfect casting by Weiden & Kennedy London. Three says they used a pug for this campaign because “pugs are charming creatures that embody the spirit of the internet: serious, but with a just a little bit of silliness.” I think I’m going to start calling the internet, Mabel from now on.

If you want to dress up the pug in your life with crocheted birthday cake hat, have a look at PugsnGiggles’ Etsy shop here.

Lacy crochet coasters

The very talented Caroline, blogger at Patchwork Harmony and editor of online publication 91 Magazine as well as freelance editor, writer & designer, published my pattern for these lacy crochet coasters on her blog today.  I’m very honoured to be one of her crafty guest bloggers – the woman won the Women in Publishing New Venture award 2012 for Pete’s sake!

lacy crochet coastersI can honestly say that I’ve never seen anything I’ve crocheted styled and photographed so beautifully. I think a Big Mac wrapper and loo roll will look beautiful if Caroline styled it for a photo shoot!

You will find more beautiful photos and the pattern for the square and round lacy crocheted coasters on her blog here.

Do have a look at the brilliant 91 Magazine. The magazine features news, style tips, shopping ideas, interiors, features on craft and vintage style and proudly supports small businesses, designers and crafts people. It’s unputdown(load)able.

The pattern is in the Ravelry database here. Please link your lacy coasters to the pattern so that Caroline and I can see what you made!
