The problem with buying yarn online

yarn

Like most of you, I do love my online yarn shopping. It’s convenient, the websites are very user-friendly, delivery is usually fast, online yarn shops regular send out great voucher codes and best of all you can do it from the comfort of our home.

This morning I decided to buy the yarn for one of the beautiful crochet and knitting tops in Marie Wallin’s latest book Filigree. She used Rowan 4-ply Summerlite so I thought I’d do the same. No substituting, no worry about getting the gauge right – all I had to do was decide what colour I want to use for Anemone.

I have two favourite online yarn shops: Deramores and Loveknitting, so that’s where I pointed my mouse, expecting to only have to compare the prices of their Rowan Summerlite.

Oh dear.  This was not going to be as easy as I thought. The shades of Rowan Summerlite on these two sites might as well have been two different brands, they were so different. The Pinched Pink shade immediately stood out for me, but for the wrong reasons.

On the Deramores site, this is what I saw. Pinched Pink is the colour in the big square. It looks like a muted orange-pink:

Rowan Pinched Pink Deramores

Here is Loveknitting‘s version of Rowan Summerlites shades with Pinched Pink as the main colour.  It looks fuchsia pink. Can this be the same yarn? Can it be the same shade? Apparently it is.  After reading this blogpost, Loveknitting have corrected the photographs they had on their website.

Rowan Pinched Pink Loveknitting

The correct shades are now showing on Loveknitting.com and they left a comment on this blogpost.

Loveknitting Rowan summerlite

On Rowan’s own website this is what Pinched Pink looks like. This is much more of what I would have expected from a Rowan shade: muted and soft. Not even close to how Deramores or Loveknitting has photographed the shade:

Rowan Pinched Pink Rowan website

I know we have to take into consideration computer resolution when looking at colours on a website, but I’m looking at these three website on my one laptop, so the differences are not in my screen resolution, it’s in the way the websites photographed the yarn.

I’m hesitant to make any colour decisions now that I’ve seen this. I was leaning towards Periwinkle or High Tide, but how can I be sure of what I’ll be getting? Go look for yourself the differences in High Tide on these three website. It’s quite shocking.

What would you do in this situation? It’s probably safest to use the Rowan colour chart to make my decision on what shade to buy. Or do it the old-fashioned way and just go to a bricks and mortar yarn shop.

Have you ever bought yarn online expecting one shade, only to find it looking totally different when it arrived?

On a Monday I can still remember the fun I had over the weekend, Wednesday is the middle of the work week, on Thursday I start getting hopeful and on a Friday I can taste the weekend. But what about a Tuesday? It’s so…. just there. Weekend memories are too far away and the upcoming weekend might as well be a year away.

What we need is a bit of colourful inspiration to get us going on a Tuesday, don’t you think? A pretty picture, beautiful scenery or colourful imagery. Yup, that’ll liven up Tuesdays and turn it into a terrific day!

From now on I will go through my photos and Pinterest likes every Tuesday and find us a pretty picture to add colour and joy to the day.

Stylecraft Yarns won and to be won

The title of this post sounds like a Chines take-away doesn’t it? “Chow mein and wonandtobewon please. No chopsticks, I need a fork” Hahaha

Moving on….

I won Stylecraft Espresso yarn in a giveaway through Twitter. Yeah! Free yarn! Stylecraft tweeted that the next person to like their Facebook page, would win five balls of Espresso yarn. My timing was perfect and the Gods of Crochet were on my side again: I won! When they tweeted my name as the winner and asked that I get in contact, I told them that I would not keep the winnings for myself, but rather give it away as a raffle prize at the Kidney Research UK event on 9 November. Paying it forward, sharing the yarn loving and all that 😉

Espresso yarn

But wait, there’s more. When Stylecraft heard that I will be giving away my winnings they said they would send me a little something extra for the event!

What they sent was Stylecraft Special DK in pinks, oranges and white. You know I’m not a huge fan of pink, but the combination of pink and orange really does look scrummy *quoting Mary Berry*. Stylecraft asked that I “be creative” and use the yarn to create something for Breast Cancer Awareness month. I kept half of the yarn for that (I will show you what I made for Breast Cancer Awareness in a follow-up blogpost) and the other half is a second prize for the raffle. Score!!

pink style craft

Thank you Stylecraft for being so generous. I’ve always loved using Stylecraft yarns – my Identity Crisis blanket was made using only Stylecraft Special DK, and their Cotton Classique is a brilliant DK cotton at a very good price. Now that I know how generous the Stylecraft Yarns people are, I’m an even bigger fan.

If you want to get your hooks into these prizes, you would have to buy a £1 raffle ticket at the Crochet for Kidney Research UK event in Thames Ditton on the 9th of November. 15 Days to go to the big day!!!

If you can’t come to Thames Ditton, Loveknitting.com sells a huge selection of Stylecraft yarns here and until midnight 27 October they are giving 10% discount on all DK yarns if you use the code DOUBLEORKNITS. And remember, if you put in my name (Natasja King) in the “Referred By A Friend” box at checkout, you will get 15% off on your first order at Loveknitting.com!

Wowcher, yarn

Yarn storage. The age-old question for any crocheter or knitter. Do you display your yarn or hide it? Do you arrange it according to colour, weight or fibre? So many choices! A lot depends on the space available. In my case, I have a cupboard in the spare room with a canvas shoe organiser like this one, a couple of tote bags hanging from hangers in the same cupboard and the cardboard box that my Anchor crochet thread winnings arrived in. I thought I had a good enough system as everything is hidden away yet easily accessible.

Until…

John saw my Yarn Pinterest board with beautiful yarn storage ideas.

“Wow, that wall of yarn looks cool.”

“I know, right?! One day when we have a big house we could do the same.”

“Why wait? I want to get rid of those three Ikea prints in the spare room anyway. We can display your yarn on that wall.”

“Seriously? You wouldn’t mind?”

“No, I’d like it. And it would make you happy, so I’ll be happy.”

“Aaaaaaah! Honey!!!”

“That’s how I roll.”

Not only that, he was the one who found the perfect yarn storage solution: three wooden wall cubes at a discounted price with Wowcher. Like the man says: that’s how he rolls.

20130410-064208.jpg

We both love this Wall Of Yarn Art – it changes all the time as I use yarn and buy more. Never a dull moment. Literally.

Of course I still have the shoe organiser and tote bags, but they now only hold acrylics and other odds and ends.

20130410-064224.jpg

I’ve reserved my wall cubes for cotton only. Most of my cotton yarn is Rowan Handknit which comes in 50g balls and fit perfectly into the cubes. I just love the huge spectrum of colours. It truely is inspirational to see such a colourful selection right there on the wall. My creative juices flow as soon as I walk into the spare room.

Did you notice the empty space in the biggest cube? The one with the blues and greens? I certainly noticed and aim to rectify this soon. All in the name of art yarn.

The start of a (mainly) grey sweater

It seems that Autumn has well and truly arrived in the UK. That means only one thing: time to start making those wooly sweaters and cardigans. Yeah!!!

I actually started planning the sweater I’m currently  (inbetween the projects with my Aida crochet thread) working on, way back in May. If I say “plan” I mean, find a pattern and buy the yarn. The dark grey Garnstudio Drops Merino Extra Fine was bought on Mastercard Morning.  Two of those Mastercard Mording projects are completed, this one is the only one left to go.

I’ve since changed my mind about the pattern though. I really tried to get my head around Doris Chan’s Talle Latte but I just couldn’t do it. It was causing me so much stress to figure out what she wanted me to do, that I just gave up and looked for something that I would enjoy making – enter Lionbrand’s Driftwood Pullover. I will only refer to it as Driftwood this once though… Watch this clip from Meet the Fockers, and you’ll know why.  Until I find a more suitable name for the sweater, I’ll just call it The (mainly) Grey Sweater.

Lionbrand Driftwood sweater and yarn.jpg

“Mainly” because I’ll be adding Redcurrent red to the grey. Surely you’ll know by now that I would be incapable of doing a whole sweater in a solid charcoal grey. No Sirree. I’m going to use the Sublime Extra Fine Merino for the neck, wrist and bottom edging. Right? Can you see it? The tiny lines of red just to add a pop of colour to the dull grey? Yes Sirree!!

The Sublime was bought at a online haberdashery store I stumbled upon called LoveKnitting. Now you crocheters shouldn’t be putt off by the reference to knitting. As can be seen from the photo below, they also sell crochet hooks so it’s not all knitting. I bought the 12mm KnitPro Symfonie hook to take along to the Granny Square Workshop I’ll be attending at Toft Alpaca Farm on Saturday. (Can Not Wait!) I’ve never used Symfonie crochet hooks, but they look so pretty and colourful how could it not be a great crochet hook?

KnitPro crochet hook and sublime yarn.jpg

I was so impressed by Loveknitting’s packaging that I just had to take a photo to show you. Can you believe that this is the way a big online store would package their items? It looks like I bought the yarn and crochet hook from an Etsy or Folksy seller. Huge thumbs up to Loveknitting for adding a personal touch!

20121021-104330.jpg

Another great thing about Loveknitting is the 10% discount you receive on your first order and they also do free postage if you spend more than £25 in one go.  I also like the way they sort the yarns on their site: you can search according to weight, brand, colour and/or fibre and the whole site has a clean and modern feel.  For an online store only operating since April 2012, I think they’re great!

Before I spend more money at Loveknitting, I have to finish 42 of the 58 squares for The (mainly) Grey Sweater. The sooner I get through the grey, the sooner I can get my hook into that Sublime Redcurrent and then on to the gazillion other crochet projects on my To Hook List.

Oooo, I see that Loveknitting gives you 10% off all yarn bought before midnight 2 November with code 10SPOOKS…. as if I need any more encouragement to buy more yarn!

I’m back from the weekend in Germany and boy did I have a great yarn experience!

I told you about my plan to visit the Schoppel-Wolle factory shop in this blogpost. I can now honestly say that this visit was the highlight of the whole trip!

We arrived at the Schoppel-Wolle factory in Wallhausen just after 11am, eager for some heavy Mastercard action. The shop looked a bit quiet and dark when we rang the bell, but I didn’t think much of it. A lady come to the door only to give us the devastating news that the shop only opens at 2pm! I was so disappointed. I explained that we couldn’t come back at 2pm seeing as we have to drive down to Fussen. I think she could see the disappointment in my face. She asked whether I knew what I wanted to buy (as opposed to just leisurely browsing for no reason). As soon as I said “crazy zauberball” she opened the door for me! I almost kissed her! I had the whole shop for myself!! I am so grateful to the lady for taking pity on me. My day could have turned out so much differently if she hadn’t.

So, here I am shopping in the factory shop. I couldn’t stop smiling. The shop is floor to ceiling full of yarn. It’s heavenly! I was so happy I had to do a little happy jiggy. You’ll spot the photo with the jiggy easily…

From this blog I knew there was a discounted yarn area as well, but I didn’t want to ask the nice lady how to get there – I was just grateful to be in the full price shop! Luckily she came back into the main shop to switch on the light for the discounted yarn room. Aaaaaaahhhhh (I’m hearing angel voices as I recall that moment). Balls and balls of yarn at discounted prices! There’s that super excited, can’t control myself jiggy again.

Later, when I got back to the car (and off the yarnfumes high) I saw that the packets of yarn from the discounted area, are marked in groups. I’m not sure what the yarn groups mean, but from what I paid it looks like the higher the group number, the more expensive it is per gram, so I think it’s has something to do with yarn/colour quality.

I don’t mind what the reason is, I know the yarn will still be of excellent quality. Why do I know that? Because Hubby and I got a behind the scenes tour of the factory, lead by Mr. Gerhard Schoppel himself! During the tour we saw how the coloured wool is spun, steam treated, wound into balls and quality control done. It was brilliant! Considering I wasn’t even supposed to be in his shop, for him to then come out to our car just as we were about to leave to ask if we wanted a tour, was amazing!

I’m so glad I knew what I wanted to crochet with my yarn, otherwise I could very easily have bought everything in that factory, especially in the discounted yarn room. It was difficult to  choose, but I knew I had to be strict with myself, and I could always buy Schoppen-Wolle over the internet so I managed to (barely) restrain myself.

What I ended up buying was this:

A 150g ball of Admiral Starck 6 in Turkis, shade no. 4780 for €8.25. It’s DK (and my shawl is supposed to be done in Fingering) but I didn’t notice and I don’t care. This also the only full price yarn I bought.

Three balls (a total of 257g) Lace Ball in Brombeeren, shade no. 1872 for €5.14. This was marked Restegruppe 3.

Two balls (a total of 190g) Crazy Zauberball in Der Lenz Ist Da, shade no. 2136 for €9.50. This was marked Restegruppe 4.

Two balls (a total of 185g) Crazy Zauberball in Papegei, shade no. 1701 for €3.70. This was marked Restegruppe 3.

Bearing in mind that a full price 100g of Crazy Zauberball is €10, these were absolute bargains.

Schoppel-Wolle has a fan for life, and I haven’t even used the yarn yet!

(I also came across yarn shops in Ulm and Tauberbischofsheim. The photos for these quick visits are on my Facebook page. After the Schoppel-Wolle experience I didn’t feel the need, or have the space in my luggage, for more purchases so there’s no blog post about those three shops. )

The Chilean poet, the German yarn and the British driver

Love at first sight, that is what I felt for this shawl.

Do you agree? Man, it’s pretty! This triangle shawl is called Recuerdos de infancia which means “childhood memories”. It is designed by the Chilean poet Gabriele Ordenes. You just know it’s going to be good if you see the pattern is designed by a poet! If you’re as in love with this as I am, you can buy the pattern here for $6.

Gabriele also designed this triangle shawl called Flores de invierno which means “Winter’s flowers”.

Buy the pattern here for $6, or buy both shawl patterns for $10. (You can also buy the patterns in Gabriela’s Etsy shop 7Knits.)

Not one for doing things in halves, I bought both patterns because 1) it’s cheaper and 2) I couldn’t choose between the two shawls because they’re both so *&%*$ beautiful! Do you see the intricate detail, the lace effect and pointy edges? Can you imagine draping it around your neck like a scarf, or across your shoulder? I can and I can’t wait to get started!!!

I already know what yarn I’m going to use for my shawl: Zauberball by the German sock yarn specialists Schoppel Wolle.  The reddish brown ball of yarn in the Loop Yarn Shop  advertisements (which you may have seen on the inside cover page of Mollie Makes magazines), is Zauberball.

Now, guess where I’m going to buy my Zaurberball.

Can’t guess?

Well let me tell you: at the Schoppel Wolle head office in Wallhausen! I’m not going to Germany specifically for this shop, although I can’t promise that I wouldn’t have booked the first flight to Germany after having read this blogpost. Hubby is taking me to drive along the Romantic Road next week and we’ll be passing through Wallhausen on our way to the first town on the Romantic Road route, so it’s totally meant to be! The road trip is also my 35th birthday present.

What better way to celebrate a birthday than doing a road trip with my soulmate & best friend, seeing beautiful German villages and stopping to buy yarn along the way?!

Needless to say I will be doing a full report on any and all yarn shops we pass, including of course Schoppel Wolle.

Her Schoppel beware, the British Hooker is on her way. I’ve got an empty suitcase and I’m not afraid to fill it.

I bought more yarn. Again.  (It’s the “Dark Old Pink” in the photo below to crochet this tunic.)

I think I’m addicted, but I have no desire to recover from the addiction so I guess I’m just obsessed.

I’m okay with that.
