Two more packets of squares for the blankets for the Crochet For Kidney Research UK event arrived this week!
Thank you Meara and Nicky, they’re perfect: purple and white, 15 cm, in acrylic yarn and ends woven in. Both of you wrote lovely notes with encouraging words, which I really appreciate and enjoyed reading. Thank you so much.

Do you remember this three dimensional flower square that I designed? I called it Granny Square in Bloom and used it in a cushion for my friend.
Ring a bell? Well, this free pattern has been translated from the US crochet terms into UK and Australian terms by Shelley Husband of Spincushions! Shelley lives in South West Victoria, Australia and runs a weekly crochetalong called In A Spin. She asked for my permission to use my pattern as square 45 for the In A Spin CAL. Of course I said yes! Shelly’s CAL has a Ravelry group and Flickr group. I had a great time flicking through all the photos of the squares. There are some pretty amazing blankets in the making over in Oz!
I asked Shelley to tell me more about herself and her crochetalong. Here’s what she said:
Early 2012, I decided to teach myself to crochet by doing a weekly CAL as run by a craft chain store here in Australia. I had so much fun doing it over the 25 weeks, I was a bit lost when it was finished. I decided to run my own CAL to take it’s place so I could continue to learn as much as I could. A lot of folks who did the same one have also tagged along on to the In a Spin CAL. As most are here in Australia, I have been asking permission from pattern designers to translate their patterns into UK terms. Its been great working with so many lovely folks. We are up to our 47th pattern now 🙂
I’ve been challenging CAL participants with some pretty tricky stuff, as well as some just beautiful patterns. We are coming close to the end of the project now – we’ll be done before Xmas 🙂
It’s been a great learning experience. I am so much more knowledgeable about this crochet thing 🙂 I still have heaps to learn.
I’ve begun to design my own patterns now and I just love sitting down with my fave hook and ball of yarn and seeing what comes out.
I feel very honoured that my pattern was chosen for this fun crochetalong. Shelley did me a huge favour by translating the pattern in to UK / Austrlian terms too! If you click here you will be taken to Shelley’s post entitled “In A Spin Week 45” and see the translated pattern. The Ravelry pattern page has also been updated to include Shelley’s translation.
If you are making Granny Square in Bloom squares in purple and white for the Crochet for Kidney Research UK event, Shelley’s translation will be very helpful to you.
I wish Shelley and her crochetalongers (is that a word?) all the best for their big project. I take my hat off to anyone that can stick to a crochetalong that runs for a whole year with a new square every week!
Thanks again Shelley for including my square in your crochetalong.

This is nothing fancy; just a short video of me crocheting what I have crocheted. I hope you like it.
I didn’t have time over the weekend to video how I crochet, so I’m showing you what I have crocheted so far. It’s the Sunset Shades chevron scarf, using Vinni’s Colours Nikkim. Don’t forget, I’m hosting a giveaway of purple and white Vinni’s Colours Nikkim in this post. Please do enter! It’s really easy and you will love the colour explosion.
The shades you see in this scarf are Natural, Stone, Baby Yellow, Ballet Pink, Peach, Red Violet, Violet and Wine.

I’m so super excited about the Crochet for Kidney Research UK event on the 9th of November. Seriously people, this thing is coming together in such a blessed way! It’s amazing how the Universe provides when you just sit back and let it do it’s thing.
I firmly believe “whatever the mind can conceive it can achieve”. I’ve imagined how this event will turn out so all I had to do was ask people and companies to contribute, sit back and watch how it all falls into place. Easy. In some cases I didn’t even have to ask – they contacted me.
Let me give you some examples:
I have truly been blessed with the responses from people from all across the world who are crocheting squares. Have a look at the conversations on the Ravelry group, and you will see what I mean. There are ladies who plan to send me a box of squares. I kid you not!
All I can say to the sponsors, the companies and the crocheters is thank you, thank you, thank you. You have all been extremely generous.
At the moment I only have four confirmed attendees for the event but I know I will reach my goal of 40 people. There’s no way things can be falling in place the way it is, only for people not to show up. All the good vibes from everyone involved so far, will attract more good vibes and more good people. That’s just the way it is.
45 Days, 18 hours and 4 minutes to go. Bring it on!

Posted in My ramblings, Terrific Tuesdays
On a Monday I can still remember the fun I had over the weekend, Wednesday is the middle of the work week, on Thursday I start getting hopeful and on a Friday I can taste the weekend. But what about a Tuesday? It’s so…. just there. Weekend memories are too far away and the upcoming weekend might as well be a year away.
What we need is a bit of colourful inspiration to get us going on a Tuesday, don’t you think? A pretty picture, beautiful scenery or colourful imagery. Yup, that’ll liven up Tuesdays and turn it into a terrific day!
From now on I will go through my photos and Pinterest likes every Tuesday and find us a pretty picture to add colour and joy to the day.
xxxxxx
It’s not colourful, but I’m sure it made you smile.
Wishing you all a Terrific Tuesday!

Yes, that’s right, I sell yarn! I’m so excited! My Etsy shop is stocked with Vinni’s Colours Nikkim 100 % cotton DK yarn in white, and four shades of purple. Go on, go have a look. Here is the link that will take you straight to the yarn section of my Etsy shop.
As you’ve probably guessed, my decision to stock white and purple shades is not by accident – these are the colours of the squares for the Crochet for Kidney Research UK blankets we’re making. Now you don’t have to wonder what yarn weight, fibre or shade of purple is best for the squares because I’m supplying you with the perfect yarn. Better still, 25p from each ball of purple and white yarn that I sell, will go straight to Kidney Research UK!
Now you’re probably wondering about the yarn.
If you don’t live in South Africa there’s a fair chance Vinni’s Colours will be unknown to you. In South Africa however, I dare say it’s the best known and most commonly used yarn around. “Vinni’s” is derived from the owner, Vinni Nielsen’s name. “Nikkim” is made up of the names of Vinni’s children Nikolai and Kim. You’ve already seen Nikkim in action on this blog – it’s the yarn I’ve been using for my Sunset Shades chevron scarf. I’ve had so many questions about the yarn and comments about the amazing shades, that I just knew I had to start selling it to my wonderful blog readers.
There are two things that made me fall in love with this yarn.
Firstly, the colour. All Vinni’s Colours yarn are hand dyed. Yes, dyed by hand. This means that you get an almost marbled, tonal variation in the colour. I’m going try to explain it to you in hair dye terms. Back in the 80’s all home hair dyes gave you flat, solid coloured hair. Nowadays you can’t even tell who had their hair dyed in a fancy shmanshy salon and who bought a home hair dye because the new stuff “works with your natural tones and highlights.” Vinni’s Colours is like the new stuff – interesting, varied and without a mass-produced look to it. Any other cotton yarn looks like a 80’s home hair dye job. Not only is the yarn hand dyed, it’s also skeined and balled by hand and sun dried in the African sunshine on the factory forecourt. I’m positive that it’s that loving human touch and African sunshine that adds a little something extra to the colours. Nikkim is available in 64 solid colour shades and eight variegated, but I’m only stocking five (for now).
Secondly, the feel and drape. It’s soft. Really soft. The yarn gives a beautiful drape. I won’t use it to make crocheted baskets that needs to be sturdy and hold it’s shape, but for baby wear, cardigans, scarfs and blankets it’s perfect. My Sunset Shades chevron scarf is done in SC and HDC stitches which would normally make for a very dense fabric, yet the scarf still drapes and feels soft – I would not have achieved this if I used, for instance, Rowan Handknit Cotton despite both being DK weights. You really have to feel this cotton yarn to believe how soft it is.
Even if you don’t want to use Vinni’s Colours Nikkim to make squares for the Crochet for Kidney Research UK blankets, 25p of each ball of purple and white sold will still go to Kidney Research UK, so you’re supporting a very worthwhile charity just by buying this cotton yarn. Vinni’s Colours also provide a much needed income to the South Africans who are employed to hand dye, skein and ball the yarn. It’s win-win!
Feeding your yarn addiction has never felt this good.
Speaking of win-win…… I’m giving away one ball of each of white, dark purple, lilac, violet and plum to one lucky reader! All you have to do is have a look at the photos below and select four shades that you would want to use for your next project and tell me what that project would be. I had to break up the huge selection of Nikkim (64 shades!) into four colour groups because they wouldn’t all fit into one photo, so don’t think you have to choose a colour from each photo.
The winner will be chosen randomly on Sunday 29 September at 16:00 GMT.
I absolutely love all these amazing shades. Good luck choosing only four! Lime, Avocado and Deep Blue are my favourites. And Peacock and Pale Sage. And Mint and Kingfisher. Geez, I can’t choose! If you have the same problem, feel free to choose more than four shades for the giveaway.
I’m really looking forward to sending out packets of purple and white yarn to my lovely readers, and giving 25p for each ball sold to Kidney Research UK. It really is win-win for me, you and Kidney Research UK.

This is my longest video yet. It had to be because I explain how to make the long single crochet stitches on either side of the “peaks” in the chevron.

I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy op Nicki Trench’s latest book Cute & Easy Crochet with Flowers. The book is filled with 35, count it, 35! beautiful crochet projects incorporating floral motifs. The 35 projects are divided into three chapters: Starting Out, Practice Makes Perfect and Confident Crocheting. Like any good crochet book it also contains a Crochet Know-How section which will guide novice crocheters and experts alike along their way, with stitches and techniques.
A very clever touch to this book is that the crochet stitch abbreviations are given for every pattern, and only the abbreviations that you would need for that project.
This means no more flipping to the back or front to look up stitch abbreviations – you have it right there in the pattern. This also means that a novice crocheter isn’t intimidated by the long list of crazy crochet stitches, but can work their way through crochet stitches one at a time, and as needed.
The book really has the most beautiful projects. Best of all, you can mix and match the type of flowers for each pattern. If you’re Starting Out you can make an easy purse, a Kindle cover, egg cosies or a Hexagon Flower Throw. (The Hexagon Flower Throw is known on Ravelry and various blogs, as the African Flower Hexagon). Then move on to Practice Makes Perfect where there are projects for your home like placemats, shelf edging and a beautiful Buggy Blanket. Finally in the Confident Crochet section there’s the Gypsy Queen Throw which I predict is going to be a huge hit. (Of course I’m only listing my highlights for each section – there are many more projects for you to choose from.)
As you can see, the photography and styling for Cute & Easy Crochet with Flowers is stunning. It made me want to 1) move home and 2) crochet all 35 projects so that my new home would look like this.
So what was my project of choice? I immediately fell in love with the Vintage-style Vase Coasters from the Confident Crochet section. The pattern is very well written (as all of Nicki’s patterns are) and easy to memorize once you’ve made your first coaster. The handy tip to this pattern was a lifesaver. Nicki gives the colour options to make two versions of the vase coaster, but I made mine in shades of purple and white so that I can use it as a table decoration for the Crochet for Kidney Research UK day on the 9th of November. Great plan right?

I also didn’t stop here. I made two more in the colours I used for the Lacy Coasters guest blog on Patchwork Harmony. Nicky’s vase coaster is the perfect accompanying item for my lacy coasters. I left out the flowers along the edge, and in stead made a 3 chain picot so that the vase coasters would have the same edging as the lacy coasters.
I think Cute & Easy Crochet With Flowers is a fantastic crochet book. The patterns suit all levels of crochet skills. Every crocheter will find something they would want to make for themself, as a gift, for the home, or just for the love of crocheting flowers. The book is currently on sale on Amazon for £9.09. There’s a link to the Amazon listing for the book on the right of my blog under the “Books I recommend” section, or you can click on the photo of the cover at the top of this post.
If you buy Cute and Easy Crochet With Flowers, I would love to hear what you think of it and see which of the 35 projects you chose to crochet first.
