Mollie Makes Luggage Tag

Mollie Makes

The latest issue of Mollie Makes dropped through the letterbox on Saturday. Joy!!!! This month’s issue included fabric and instructions to make your own Wild West style luggage tag. I’ve been a subscriber to Mollie Makes from issue no. 2, but this was the first time that I though “What the heck, I’m gonna use the Mollie Makes freebies and make something!”

Roll on Sunday morning and I was in my payamas, ready to craft me some luggage tags! (I’m saying this with a John Wayne cowboy twang, cigarette dangling from the corner of my mouth.)

Being the bad@ass cowboy that I am, I wasn’t really feeling the mustard spotty fabric, so I used leftover greyish-green from my Larger Than Life crochet handbag for the front of the tag.

My horse sewing machine is somewhere in the garage, so I got out the needle and thread and did it old school style. Backstitch by hand baby, that’s how wild I am.

When it came to attaching the loop, I realised that if I follow the instructions to the letter, I wouldn’t be able to attach my tag to my luggage, as the loop is sewed into the top of the tag, so I improvised – cowboy crochet style.  I made two chains of 25 chain stitches each with a Rowan Handknit Cotton yarn and 3mm crochet hook and sewed the two to the top of the tag. Now I can tie it in a lasso bow to my luggage.

I love my luggage tag! Do you see how the wooden house peeks out just above the green frame and how the deer and duck is framed behind the clear acetate. I didn’t plan it that way, it just worked out brilliantly well this way! When my name and address info is in the tag, the house will be visible just above my home address. So perfect!

My next flight is the 19th of July to Stuttgart. I’m only taking hand luggage, but I’m definitely going to be using my handmade Mollie Makes luggage tag. So bully (that’s cowboy slang for happy)!

Say you don’t like my luggage tag. Go on, say it.

Retro Looks granny square cushion

A couple of weeks ago I posted a photo on the crocheTime facebook page of Page 57 of Mollie Makes Issue 13. It was Ilaria Chiaratti’s granny square cushion. Boy oh boy, how pretty is that cushion?!

I wasn’t the only one that thought so. Lynn Holland of OneIMadeEarlierToday thought so too and asked me to crochet her the cushion. I was delighted and got to work immediately; it’s granny squares after all and I loooooove granny squares.

As you only need scraps of yarn, I was able to raid my Stylecraft Special DK stash. Who knew I had so much yarn? After a long deliberation I whittled it down to 16 colours plus white.

I made 36 3-round grannies, of which the last round is always white. I used Ida’s own join-as-you-go method described here, crocheted a giant white granny square for the back and sewed the front and back together with this method.

Then all I had to do was add the six buttons. Mollie Makes Issue 13 came with this pack of 6 cute buttons.

I used two of the Mollie Makes buttons, then raided my button tin for the other four. I would never dream of using six of the same – mix it up and the more the merrier is what I say.

Here are photos of the end product.  There just is something special about colourful granny squares surrounded by white. So fresh and pretty. I love it!

As the article says:

A simple white backdrop is just the thing to show off bright colours, and it works likea dream for this crochet cushion.

I’m only able to enjoy the Retro Looks cushion for one more day as tomorrow she’s going in the post to Lynn and her new home in Lynn’s studio.  It was such fun making this cushion I may just consider making more to sell in my Etsy shop (once I’ve got rid of the wearable crochet bee in my bonnet that is).

Cufflettes

crochet, crochet pattern, free pattern, Mollie Makes, wrist warmer

Cufflettes. Say it slowly. Savour the sound. It sounds so deliciously French* and classy, doesn’t it?

But what am I going on about? Cufflettes? It’s the name of a pattern for, what is commonly known as, wrist warmers. Oh, cufflettes sound so much better don’t they?!

The pattern was designed by Kalurah and is available as a free download from Ravelry. Just click here.

I crocheted  these cufflettes last winter (it only took a couple of hours) and had to get them out again this week. I wear them over my fleece gloves because the wrist section of the gloves are just not long enough – when temperatures reach 1 degree every little piece of exposed skin need to be covered!

I just love how these look peeking out under a sleeve, or worn just as they are. I, of course, jazzed them up a bit with mismatched buttons. I really do have a thing for buttons.

If you like wrist warmers, you will fall in love with the wrist warmers on the cover of Mollie Makes issue 10.

They scream vintage, lace and Victorian. Have a look on the Mollie Makes blog, here for more information.

*I’m currently reading “Madame Tussaud” by Michelle Moran which is set during the French Revolution. All the men in the book seem to be wearing coulettes (knee-breeches) so that may be why “cufflettes” has such a French ring to me. Cufflettes. Cufflettes. Ooh, I still love that word. It could so easily have been cuffextenders, or longcuffs, but no. It’s cufflettes. Beautiful!

I adore crochet. I adore flowers. I adore bright colours. Ergo I totally freaked out when I saw the cover of Mollie Makes issue 3!

Luckily I am already subscribed to this fantastic magazine so I have the pattern for the flowers. However…. if you don’t have Mollie Makes magazine lying around, but would love to put hook to wool for one of these lovely flowers designed by Annie of AnnieDesign, you can visit The Guardian’s website for the pattern tutorial! How cool is that?! Just visit The Guardian’s site here.

Spreading the crochet love, one link at a time.
