Crochet on TV (Orange Is The New Black)

In August 2013 Kyli Rhynalds contacted me with a plea for help. She had seen a crocheted blanket on Episode 12 of Orange Is The New Black. She emailed to say “I HAVE to recreate! I’m sure you understand that need. 🙂 Do you think you can help?” Of course I understand. The blanket is absolutely beautiful! I seriously had gooseflesh when I saw it. It looks so femine, lacy and soft. I can imagine that prison inmates would fight about this blanket. Hey, I’m a free womand and I’ll fight for it!

I don’t have a lot of photos to go by, but between Kyli and me we figured out that two motifs from Pierrot Yarns can be combined to make a very similar blanket.

For the yarn, stick to light grey and two shades of a peachy-pink in Chunky or Aran with an appropriate size crochet hook.

For the grey octagons, I found Colour the Season Coasters, which is a charted Japanese pattern from Pierrot Yarns. Click on the “direct link to pattern PDF” hyperlink in the Ravelry description to open a pdf file for the crochet chart. For the flowers I think this is the closest flower motif. It’s also a charted Japanese octagon pattern from Pierrot Yarns so it should fit it with the grey octagons. If you look at the first photo, you’ll see that the spaces between two motifs are filled with 5-chain links. These 5-chain links are used in the grey octagon motif, so just keep adding those 5-chain links around the edges of your motifs to make up the empty spaces and join the motifs together.

In the second photo you will see how the blanket is edged. You basically have to fill in the spaces between the motifs around the edges, with more 5-chain links, and use (US) double crochet / (UK) treble crochet stitches to make the sides square. I think you would have to do like they did by making wide borders, otherwise your blanket may be too floppy. The wide border is what makes it keep its shape.

This blog post is certainly not a pattern for the Orange Is The New Black blanket – you’ll have to play around a bit and figure it out as you go, but hopefully the two motifs I found can point you in the right direction.

*If you need help with reading Japanese crochet charts, I list handy websites in the last paragraph of this post.

More crochet spotted on TV: a very pretty, brightly coloured granny square cushion in the advertisement for the digital switchover Help Scheme.

I wish I could find a better image of the cushion, because it really is very pretty and sweet (but only half as sweet as the lovely lady sitting next to it).

More crochet spotted on TV!

This very pretty granny square afghan is in one of the Dooms Day Killer’s victim’s houses in Dexter Season 6, Episode 12.

I really like the off-white and shades of blue, with just a touch of yellow. Whoever made this afghan also chose not to join the squares in the traditional way where the squares are seamed together, but rather used an open, lacey way of joining the squares. I think they used Crochet Cabana’s Lacy joining method which you can find here.

Le Monde Sucrette describes a similar method here, although hers is a single row of zigzag.

You can also create this effect with rows of shells to join, like Carina does on her Craftblog.

You can also have a look at Robyn Chachula’s sample pattern from her Crochet Stitches Visual Encyclopedia for the written and diagramatic pattern for joinging grannies.

I’ve had an off-white-with-bright-colours project on my To Hook list for a while now. After seeing this beautiful afghan, the project has moved up the list! Traditional joining methods have however moved down the list somewhat…

More crochet spotted on TV!

Last week while on holiday in Santa Monica, trying to recover from jetlag, we watched old episodes of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (it’s the only thing on TV at 4 am!) and spotted this beauty. No, not Will Smith, the granny square blanket.

I’m on crochet spotting duty, even whilst on holiday in foreign lands. 🙂

More crochet spotted on TV! I think this shot from The Middle, Season 2, episode 2 probaby shows the most crochet blankets on one couch in the history of television! There’s a multicolour ripple, a single colour ripple and a granny square blanket! Score!!

In episode 5 of Season 2, one of The Aunts is sitting under the canary yellow granny square. I must admit that the sound of a granny square blanket with the last round of each square in canary yellow does not appeal, but seeing it in the flesh (in the yarn?), it really pops and I love it!  I can see myself sitting under something similarly clashy and bright when I reach The Aunt’s age.

My search for crochet on TV continues. Hey, it’s a tough job, but a hooker’s got to do, what a hooker’s got to do.

Another crochet blanket spotted on TV last night! This one is a lovely hexagon blanket in muted colours in Mike & Mollie, Season 2, episode 8.

In season 1 the blanket was on Mollie’s bed. I wasn’t mad enough to take photos of my TV in those days but luckily someone else was – and it’s a much better photo of the beautiful hexagon blanket on Mollie’s bed. (Hopefully Mollie wasn’t thinking of her crochet blanky when she pulled that face…)

You would probably be able to recreate the blanket using Lucy from Attic24’s Hexagon pattern, although any hexagon would do.

crochet, TV

Last week I showed you a photo of a granny square blanket as seen on Big Bang Theory. Happy happy me. Well imagine my utter utter delight when I saw a whole advertisment made out of crochet!!!! That’s right, everthing in the latest Sudafed commercial is done in crochet.

It shows a crocheted lady trying to relieve her congestion over a bowl of steam. Then it uses crochet to illustrate where mucus (green yarn…) would be in your brain. Just look at the intricate details of this brain! I wonder who crocheted this? It’s not like there’s a pattern on Ravelry for something like this.

I even recorded the whole advertisement. It’s not the best video, but you get the idea. There’s not much sound but let’s face it, we’re not interested in the sound are we?

Proof once again that brainy people crochet.
