For Bjork’s album Volta (2007) she collaborated with The Icelandic  Love Corporation, using crochet costumes, masks and dresses for the cover, and publicity shots of the album.

This is what she said of the experience:

flying from iceland on a sunday, slightly melancholic like

i sometimes am on planes but also full of anticipation for the destination. read the cultural pages in the paper.

see photos of the girls i have gradually been getting to know over the past months/years. the icelandic love corporations making art from liquorice. warms the heart. tear out one photo when the flight-attendant doesn’t see and slip it between the pages of my journal.

a photo of a mask.

find it incredible that while some kind of icelandic-woman-voodoo-music has been seething inside of me they have crocheted from cute grannydoilycrochet in neon colours this wild woman voodoo mask. and i can’t believe how similar our thoughts are. but i keep my council and decide to wait until i have worked more on the album, to see if we really are on the same wave-length. however, i do glue it on to the front page of my journal and between me and myself the mask transforms into the protector face of the project. a few months later we are all in the irish pub in hverfisgata and i find the courage to mention this to jóní. she is game. we then meet up in their studio (also in hverfisgata, the street obviously has had a very creative effect on the collaboration) and discuss our first assignment: to make a new character, an electro neon icelandic domestic joyous force of nature.

and it has gone so supernaturally well !!!

and been so much fun

because they are so good at creating creatures

that do not exist

and i wanted so much to be something

that I have never been

blanket, crochet, granny square, The Middle, TV

More crochet spotted on TV! I think this shot from The Middle, Season 2, episode 2 probaby shows the most crochet blankets on one couch in the history of television! There’s a multicolour ripple, a single colour ripple and a granny square blanket! Score!!

In episode 5 of Season 2, one of The Aunts is sitting under the canary yellow granny square. I must admit that the sound of a granny square blanket with the last round of each square in canary yellow does not appeal, but seeing it in the flesh (in the yarn?), it really pops and I love it!  I can see myself sitting under something similarly clashy and bright when I reach The Aunt’s age.

My search for crochet on TV continues. Hey, it’s a tough job, but a hooker’s got to do, what a hooker’s got to do.

blanket, crochet, Mike&Mollie, TV

Another crochet blanket spotted on TV last night! This one is a lovely hexagon blanket in muted colours in Mike & Mollie, Season 2, episode 8.

In season 1 the blanket was on Mollie’s bed. I wasn’t mad enough to take photos of my TV in those days but luckily someone else was – and it’s a much better photo of the beautiful hexagon blanket on Mollie’s bed. (Hopefully Mollie wasn’t thinking of her crochet blanky when she pulled that face…)

You would probably be able to recreate the blanket using Lucy from Attic24’s Hexagon pattern, although any hexagon would do.

I’m especially loving the stripey triangle scarf. It looks like it’s done in rows of shells. Very easy to recreate. In fact….. you can probably get the same effect with a pattern called Sezession I by Rodger Murry, available on Ravelry as a free download. 134 Of these Sezession 1 triangle scarfs have been made already! You’ll just have add a fringe for it to look like the one in Accessorize. Result!

You don’t always have to do a fancy crochet edge, or make granny squares in multiple colours.

Terrific Tuesday and crochet hangers

crochet, hangers

On a Monday I can still remember the fun I had over the weekend, Wednesday is the middle of the work week, on Thursday I start getting hopeful and on a Friday I can taste the weekend. But what about a Tuesday? It’s so…. just there. Weekend memories are too far away and the upcoming weekend might as well be a year away.

What we need is a bit of colourful inspiration to get us going on a Tuesday, don’t you think? A pretty picture, beautiful scenery or colourful imagery. Yup, that’ll liven up Tuesdays and turn it into a terrific day!

xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Today’s colour burst comes from Karen M. Andersen’s blog. I just love love love this colourful photo! It’s part of her brilliant tutorial on how to make crochet hangers.

I’ve always wanted to replace all the plastic hangers in my cupboard with colourful crochet ones, but there just always seems to be something else on the hook – notably stock for my Etsy shop or a craft market.   I’ll just have to add this brilliant project to my Ravelry queue with the seven hundred and forty nine other projects. Okay, not 749 exactly, but it does feel like it sometimes.

Have a happy hooky Tuesday people!

Crochet jewellery, proper jewellery

Lots of people make crochet jewellery.  I had a go with amigurimi balls that I threaded through ribbon. I’ve bought crochet earrings from FR33na on Etsy. Crochet jewellery are cheap and cheerful. Right? Nope.

WhiteFly, an Etsy seller from California, takes vintage crochet and casts it in sterling silver or gold! Gold people!

When I first saw the top photo on Pinterest I thought, just like the person who originally pinned it, that it’s grey yarn, or metallic yarn at the most, stiffened with fabric stiffener and shaped into a cuff. How wrong were we?!

This item is cast from real vintage lace in Sterling Silver, then plated with a thick coating of 14K gold. Every intricate detail is evident in the metal.

It is stunning to wear, a show stopper with any outfit.
Please note I cast all my items from an actual piece of lace, I use only the highest quality vintage lace and I can only make a limited edition.

Flexible to fit all sizes, stiff to hold it’s shape. Very comfortable to wear. Fit size is a standard 7″ wrist circumference.

Available in 14K gold for $6,000. Please contact me for a listing if your interested.

Have you ever seen anything so exquisite and unique?!

If you want to know more about Whitefly, bikudesigns did an interview with her on her blog. You can read it here.

Crochet jewellery will never be the same again. Suddenly my amigurimi balls on a ribbon seems very drab.

FP Spun Eighty Stage Crochet Dress

I love the idea of adding a crochet edge to the sleeve of a floaty top, and the circles at the bottom of the long skirt is really something. (I would prefer a longer lining though…)

I wonder of the Eighty Stages dress really had 80 stages in the making of it – quite possibly if you look how many seperate crochet parts there are to it. This dress makes my Identitiy Crisis blanket look like a hook in the park!
