Zigzag scarf pattern and a bit about ice cream

Do you remember my Sunset Shades Scarf? The one I made with the Vinnis Nikkim cotton yarn that my mom gave me which kicked off my love of Vinnis yarn? I blogged about that beautiful zig zag scarf way back in January and said that I will be writing up the pattern soon. “Soon” turned out to be two months later (whoops) but it’s done now and available to purchase in my Etsy shop!

I tried to make the pattern as easy as possible to follow. There are “Good To Know” and “Handy Tips” scattered throughout. There’s even links to two YouTube videos that will show you how to start the chevron and make Long SC stitches.

The magic thing about this scarf is the way the colours blend into each other so I took my time to write a pattern that would explain these colour changes as best I could. The scarf uses 10 shades (two of which are repeated within one colour sequence) so I had to keep my wits about me when I wrote the pattern! That, paired with all the hexagon joining of the Crochet For Kidneys Part 2 blankets, is the reason for the two month delay. Hopefully it will be worth the wait.

Scarf pattern collage

In my efforts to make the pattern easy to follow, each row is written in a font colour similar to the colour of the yarn. Bearing that in mind, do you see all the white, very light grey and light yellow in my scarf? It would have been impossible to read text in those colours printed on white paper, so I created a different colour scheme to write the pattern.  The example is there in the bottom left of the photo above.

Do those colour also remind you of Neapolitan ice cream? It’s the pink and brown (or should I say strawberry and chocolate) that does it for me and brings back wonderful childhood memories of enjoying Gatti’s Neapolitan ice cream. (South African blog readers will know Gatti ice cream). A big bowl full of “that stripy ice cream” after Sunday lunch was such a treat. To me chocolate, vanilla or strawberry ice cream was okay on their own, but put them together and suddenly they became cool and made desert taste ten times better.

The same applies to the zigzag scarf pattern. Lots of colours in lots of stripes makes for a scarf ten times better than any other. I hope you enjoy it just as much as I enjoyed Neapolitan ice cream.

Our hexagon hookup

Friday the 7th of February had finally arrived. It was the day of our hexagon hookup at the Court Farm Garden Centre cafe. I arrived just before 10 am to find our long table in front of the cozy fireplace. Isn’t this just the best place ever to get together with friends, old and new, for a spot of crochet?

IMG_5567 with craft border

Jude, Liz, Mary, Gill and Jenny arrived soon after me laden with bags of hexagons and even two completed blankets.  Luckily the cafe wasn’t very full at this point because we did sort of take over a bit. Squeels of “Oooh Mary that’s gorgeous!” and “Bright solid colours! Just what I needed!” could be heard over in the conifer section.

The ladies really blew me away with their generosity. Like I said in yesterday’s post, I received enough hexagons for one blanket, as well as two completed blankets yesterday. Within two minutes, the blanket count rose with three. Totally unexpected and so welcome.

We didn’t waste much time in getting our drinks and eats. Everyone knows you crochet much better when you have coffee and a scone.

IMG_5594 with craft border

We decided that the six of us would spend our two hours joining the straight sides of  six hexagons, to make the rows that I would eventually join up. I made little packets of rows for each of the two blankets I took with me. If they helped me make up the ten rows of six, all I have to do is join the 10 rows together in zig zags and do the borders for all the blankets. Easy peasy.

Here’s Mary sewing up a straight side.

IMG_5597 with craft border Jude and Liz doing their straight sides. IMG_5574 with craft borderIMG_5572 with craft borderI had such a great time with these ladies. I think it was at this point I did a little hoppity-dancemove as I returned to the table. I was in my element. I mean really: day off work, morning in a cafe, crochet, friends, coffee, scones, hexagons for charity, chit-chat about all things crochet and yarn related. How could I not be happy?

IMG_5569 with craft border So much concentration! Gill is sewing up the hexagons that she made. It looks like she will have made enough for one complete blanket!

Jenny’s little helper Nat was very well behaved and friendly. He’s the cutest little guy.

IMG_5593 with craft border Can you see how pretty Gill’s hexagons are? I can’t wait to see the completed blanket. Jenny kept her head down the whole time, working away non-stop.

IMG_5582 with craft borderHere is Mary’s blanket. IMG_5571 with craft border

Mary is very proud of her blanket. And so she should be! I can’t explain to you how well made this is. The sides are super straight, the corners extra pointy, the tension amazingly consistent throughout and the  5cm wide (US) sc / (UK) dc border done in exactly the right combination of colours.

I will take more photos of Mary’s blanket, as well as Liz’s purple and white hexagon blanket that I told you about yesterday, for a later post. You will definitely see more of this blanket!

Next time I’m doing a blanket I’m going to make a Mary Border. It’s so simple but so effective. The odds that your blanket will be made up of (US) sc / (UK) dc stitches are very slim, so using that stitch for the border is the perfect contrast and it forms a lovely stiff edge which keeps everything nicely together.  A Mary Border. That’s a thing right? It wasn’t, but now it is.

At the end of the two hours the six of us had joined all the straight sides of both blankets. Two hours extremely well spent and a great help to me.

To Liz, Mary, Jenny, Gill and Jude I want to say a huge thank you for taking the time to help join the hexagons. I had an amazing time and you’ve been a great help to me. If I could, I would do it all again next week. Hey, I’d do it again tomorrow if if I could!

Crochet for Kidney Research UK has come and gone. It feels surreal that the blogging about the event since September, the tweeting, newspaper articles, photographing hundreds of your lovingly made crocheted squares, shopping for coffee, tea, milk and anything purple, planning, decorating the Vera Fletcher Hall, writing speeches and so much more, was for a 3 hour event on a Saturday afternoon.  But you know what, it was all worth it!

I think the day was a success. There were a few empty tables, but so what. Those that were there helped to make blankets for dialysis patients, we made new friends, we crocheted, we learned more about the work that Kidney Research UK does and by buying raffle tickets, hot drinks and cakes, we raised £254.10. But that’s not all. The law firm where I’m a PA, will give £250 for the charity if an employee raises at least £250, so that means I will be sending £504.10 to Kidney Research UK! (We JUST made the £250 minimum, so whoever spent £4.10 on cake and coffee – God bless you!).

You know what got me the most exited about yesterday?: seeing all the crocheters together and knowing that you all have such good hearts and compassion for others. I know I’m supposed to say that it’s good to have raised the money, but for me, it’s more about being able to give – at the last count – 7 blankets to 7 people on dialysis and showing them that there are people out there who care about them. Care enough to have gone through the trouble of finding a pattern, buying yarn and taken the time to crochet them a blanket. That’s what it’s all about for me.

Here’s how the day went:

I did my welcome speech,

IMG_8783

followed by Jan Czaja who demonstrated the slip stitch method for crocheting squares together. John connected our camcorder to the projector so that Jane would be displayed nice and big for all to see.

IMG_8790

Jane did a great job of showing us the method and explaining what to do when you have to join two donated squares made by two different people, using different yarn, with different tension and different patterns. The answer: wiggle your squares. Thanks again Jane for being there and doing such a great job.

After Jane’s demonstration I introduced John and Pieter and they then shared their stories with everyone. It was very touching to hear their emotional stories. (If you want to read their story, visit twoguysonekidney.blogspot.com)

Now that everyone knew why we wanted to raise awareness and money for Kidney Research UK, it was time to start crocheting. My favourite part of the whole day.

As you can see we were all hard at work and there were so many squares! I will do a separate blog post about the squares and the lovely ladies who offered to take squares home to make up the blankets.

While we were crocheting, Pieter and John sold the raffle tickets.

IMG_8801

By this time it was around 12:45, which meant time to do the crochet quiz and draw the raffle prize winners. I tried to read out the quiz questions, but my voice just wasn’t loud enough, so John took over. He was a great quiz master. Congratulations to team Crochet Queens – Tammy, Cecilia, Dave (Cecilia’s carer and husband) and Jane – who got 10 out of the 12 questions correct and won the Sublime Baby Cotton Kapok yarn and gift vouchers from Black Sheep Wools. I hope you all enjoy using the super soft yarn and spending your gift vouchers! Dave very kindly gave his wooly winnings and gift vouchers to Cecilia. Nice guy, that Dave.

The raffle prizes were drawn by John, Pieter, Jane and myself. Handing out the prizes was the second best part of the day for me. I loved seeing the winners faces!

1077311_10202578022875555_1211549228_o

The prizes were sponsored by Jane Czaja who donated a crocheted basket and a place in one of her crochet workshops, I gave one of my crochet clocks, Stylecraft Yarns gave two prizes, The Crochet Chain from Waltham Abbey in Essex gave, amongst other things, three balls of Noro yarn, three books, three bamboo crochet needles and loads more yarn (!), two books were donated by Cico Books and a Sharp Crochet Hook. Thank you to each and every one of you for being so generous, it really means a lot to us. We also received a last minute raffle prize donation from Loveknitting.com. I was so surprised when Helen arrived at 10:30 with the bag of three balls of purple yarn – thank you so much Loveknitting.com! That last minute prize was won by Cecilia.

Throughout the day an old school friend of mine, Helena, and Pieter’s lovely wife Lizelle, sold hot drinks and the cakes that everyone had brought. They did an amazing job and I was really glad they were there to help out.

IMG_8816

Lizelle and Helena

I would like to mention that Nice Buns Bakery from 48 High Street Thames Ditton, donated a dozen cupcakes for us. Not only did they do it for free, they delivered it to us at the Vera Fletcher Hall and even said that if we ran out of coffee, tea etc. to just call the shop and they’ll bring us more. Aren’t they lovely?! Their blueberry and lavender cupcakes were really something special – so special that I didn’t even get a chance to take a proper photo.

I would also like to thank Tammy, who works for Kidney Research UK, who drove all the way from Peterborough to attend our event and brought with her pamphlets and Kidney Research UK merchandise. Tammy has been a great help and support to me.

Thank you to each and every one of you who sent me a square and to those of you who travelled all the way to Thames Ditton yesterday to attend the event. It means so, so, so, much to John and I.

In case you’re wondering, yes, there will be more of these type of crochet events. I learned what worked and what didn’t, so the next one will be bigger and better.

For now, I’m going to take a break from organising crochet events and finish all the blankets so that we can give them to the dialysis patients before Christmas. I’m really excited about this part of the project – can’t wait to start arranging the squares, crocheting the borders and then giving those blankets away! You can expect a lot of purple and white blanket photographs in the coming weeks 🙂

This is nothing fancy; just a short video of me crocheting whatever I’m working on at the moment. I hope you like it.

I made two more centerpieces for the tables at Saturday’s Crochet for Kidney Research UK event. There’s been a surge of interest in the event* so upped my table count from six to eight. No table left behind right? I used Vinni’s Colours Nikkim in Lilac, Violet, White and Dark Purple with a 3.5 mm crochet hook . I love working with Nikkim cotton. It’s so soft and easy to use. You can buy the purple shades here.

The pattern is Vintage-Style Vase Coaster from Nicki Trench’s book Cute and Easy Crochet With Flowers which I reviewed here.

If you are joining us on Saturday, you can buy a raffle ticket for £1 and stand a chance in winning a copy of Cute and Easy Crochet with Flowers. Cico Books also very kindly sent me a copy of Cute and Easy Knitting which you can win.

The big day is getting really close now. I’m not going to lie, I am nervous (fear of the unknown and all that) but I’m also excited. I trust that excitement will start to override the nerves. If it doesn’t, I’ll just increase my Kalms intake. The show must go on!!

*Watch out for the article by Kitty Dunn in Friday’s Get Surrey newspaper!

It’s the first of November. Can you believe it? It’s crazy how quickly time goes by. 53 Days to Christmas and, more importantly, eight days to the crochet event I’m arranging *she says swallowing  two three Kalms tablets*

With eight days to go, I think I actually have done everything I can:

  • We have purple place cards for the Master Bakers/Buyers to write on the prices of their baked goods
  • I made six purple and white mandalas for the tables and have 10 vases and 10 purple artificial daisies
  • John and Pieter’s speeches are written

  • My contribution to the baked goods will be baked and donated (!) by Nice Buns Bakery in Thames Ditton High Street
  • I received 144 squares so far, which is enough for three blankets
  • One and Two Company designed a Kidney Granny Square pattern especially for this charity project! Find the pattern here.
  • There’s a Ravelry group here
  • We even have our own hashtag for Twitter: #crochet4kidneys

Please come to our event and see what all the fuss is about. John, Pieter, Lizelle and I really hope to see you there! If you decide to come, please use the Registration form here, to tell us you’ll be there. It would be GREAT to know how many people to expect.

This is nothing fancy; just a short video of me crocheting whatever I’m working on at the moment. I hope you like it.

In this video you see me using a Sharp Crochet Hook to make a cute border for a washcloth. Jessica Taufner sent me two Sharp Crochet Hook and Pattern Book sets – one for me to use and one to be raffled at the Crochet for Kidney Research UK event. Isn’t she kind?! (By the way, we’re up to eight raffle prizes!) Using the Sharp Crochet Hook was really easy.  I’m using Anchor Freccia 6 and switched to a 2.25 mm crochet hook after using the Sharp Crochet Hook for the first row.

If you like what I’m doing in this video, you can buy a Sharp Crochet Hook on the website here. Jessica posts worldwide.

As the video only shows how I use the Sharp Crochet Hook, here’s a photo of the finished washcloth. In the end I didn’t do a fancy border. Just 5 (US) DC shells with slip stitches between each shell. I think less is more when you’re using teal blue and green…

Crochet mandalas ta-daaaah

Mandalas, modern doilies, large coasters, call them what you like. They are all the rage right now and I’ve hopped onto that bandwagon. I’ve actually been on the wagon since September when I made the “vintage-style vase coaster” from Nicki Trench’s book which I reviewed here. I really enjoyed working in the round, making each round a different stitch and different colour. I love mixing things up, so these kind of patterns are right up my street. When I made that purple and white vase coaster I knew it was going to be used as a centrepiece on the tables at the Crochet for Kidney Research UK day on the 9th of November. Now I just needed to make five more so that I had one for each of the six tables.

Out of the blue I remembered seeing mandalas in Simply Crochet magazines. They were designed by Marinke a.k.a. Winkieflash, which I follow on Twitter and Instagram. Her mandalas would be perfect for my tables! I had to flick through all my copies of Simply Crochet magazine to find the two patterns. It was a task I thoroughly enjoyed – there are so many things I still want to crochet! *Note to self: page through your crochet books and magazines more often* Lots of post-it notes and folded page corners later, I eventually found Marinke’s mandala patterns in issues 5 and 7. I made copies of the patterns and took it, my purple and white yarn and 4 mm crochet hook with me on holiday.

Aaah, what bliss to be crocheting on holiday. Between going to the beach, afternoon naps, discovering narrow streets and feasting at seaside cafes, it took me two days to crochet the mandalas. You’ve already seen the video of me sitting on the balcony, weaving in the ends. If you missed it, click here to go to the YouTube video.

I couldn’t resist hanging my mandalas on the washing line in front of our holiday flat.  I don’t think anyone from the street noticed them, but I certainly couldn’t stop looking.

20131019-211345.jpgNow for the nitty-gritty of the mandalas.

Yarn: A mix of mostly Vinni’s Colours Nikkim and some Stylecraft Cotton Classique and  Rowan Handknit cotton

Hook: 4 mm

Pattern: Summer Hearts from issue 5 and Picots and Petals from issue 7 of Simply Crochet magazine. Marinke blogged about her patterns here. She designed six mandalas for Simply Crochet magazine, so there are more to come. Yeah!

Modifications made: I had to modify them all. Not because I didn’t like the pattern, but because I had to make the mandalas bigger so that they would be roughly the same size as the vintage-style vase coaster and in proportion with a 6 to 8 seat table.

Summer Hearts 1 – I followed the pattern exactely to the end, and then repeated rows 5 and 6 and did a final row of (UK) DC with a long DC between the fans:

20131019-212058.jpg

Summer Hearts 2 – I did rows 5 and 6 twice, left out row 11 (which is worked at the back of row 10) and then did the shells from row 6 again, finishing off with a final (UK) DC row:

20131019-212138.jpg

Picots and Petals 1 – In stead of making (UK) trebles in the second-to-last row, I made (UK) double trebles:

20131019-212106.jpg

Pictots and Petals 2 – In stead of making (UK) trebles in the second-to-last row, I made (UK) double trebles:

20131019-212117.jpg

Pictors and Petals 3 – In stead of making (UK) trebles in the second-to-last row, I made (UK) double trebles@

20131019-212128.jpg

And here they all are for the group shot. Pretty aren’t they?

20131019-212929.jpg

When you see these babies again, they will be in the centre of the tables in the Vera Fletcher Hall underneath a glass vase with purple flower.

The video shows me weaving away the tails of purple and white mandalas that I made whilst on holiday in sunny Spain. Trust me, even weaving away ends is a pleasurable job when you are doing it on the sunny balcony of your holiday flat with the sound of waves breaking in the background.

I will do a full post with all the nitty-gritty of the mandalas later this week.

The Crochet for Kidney Research UK event now has it’s very own, unique, especially commissioned granny square featuring a smiling kidney! The pattern was designed by the very talented Carolina Guzman of One and Two Company.

Click on the picture below to view the PDF of the pattern. It’s cute isn’t it?

Kidney granny square patter

Back in August 2012 I blogged about hand towels that I embellished with crochet applique. I used a combination of two of One and Two Company’s designs – Cow Pig and Farm and The Tree The Houses and The Cloud. You can see the towels in this post. Knowing what Carolina is capable of, she was my first, and only choice, when I needed someone to design a kidney shape. Carolina didn’t disappoint. Not only did she design a crochet kidney applique shape, she also converted the shape into a granny square. Brilliant! She did all of this whilst submitting work to Design Wars 5, heavily pregnant and for free!

Carolina has 76 crochet patterns, and 86 crochet applique patterns on her website. This lady is a crochet design machine! She designs baskets, security blankets, garlands, rattles, and more. As for the applique – don’t get me started. Each and every one is just so cute damn cute: cars, rockets, reindeer, butterflies, snails on a branch, VW camper, penguins – there are just too many to mention. What I like most about Carolina’s work is her style, which comes through in each and every pattern. You can always spot a One and Two Company design. She has a colourful simplicity to her designs. You know exactly what it is, but it’s paired down and simplified so that it is easy to crochet without too much fuss. Her patterns are a breeze too – it’s written and charted so anyone can follow. I think One and Two Company designs and patterns are absolutely brilliant.

Here are three squares that I whipped up over the weekend. I had a great time playing around with the facial expressions of the kidney. *There’s a sentence I never thought I’d say*. I used this website for instructions on how to embroider the eyes, and this one for the mouth. This tutorial on doing a running stitch on crochet was also helpful. For the middle square I just did plain ole french knots for the eyes, but I think the embroidered eyes look better. What do you think?

Stephanie’s pattern shows three rows of shells, but to get my square to 15cm I added two more rounds. I used Vinni’s Colurs Nikkim in Dark Purple, Lilac, Violet and White.

Smiling kidney crochet square

If you make any Kidney Granny Squares, please share it on Carolina’s Ravelry Group here, and on the Crochet for Kidney Research UK Ravelry event page here.

I’m so excited about our blankets for dialysis patients! What do you think? Do you like the smiling kidneys?
