Crochet on TV (The Big Bang Theory)

Big Bang Theory, blanket, crochet, granny square, granny square afghan

It’s been a while since I’ve spotted any crochet on TV. In fact, I still haven’t seen any crochet since my last post. Where do the images in this post from Big Bang Season 5 Episode 18 come from then, you may ask.

They were taken by my dear Hubby. He was watching Big Bang in his Man Cave, while I was crocheting in my usual spot on the couch, watching Desperate Housewives. (He has been known to say things like “I can feel brain cells dying” when he is unfortunate enough to catch a glimpse of Gabby/Bree/Susan/Lynette fretting over missing dead bodies/poisoned brownies/run-over PTA members).

He may be waaaay to cool for Desperate Housewives, but luckily not so cool that he wouldn’t take a photo of a granny square afghan for his crochet mad wife.  Love you Hubby ♥.

But enough gushing for now, back to the hooking.

My very first “Spotted on TV!” post was about this very afghan in Amy’s apartment. You can see it here. These photos however give us a much better picture. It looks like the afghan is made up of 4-round granny squares, with the fourth round of each square in the traditional black.

Usually the squares for an afghan made up of different colour combinations, are put together very randomly, but here the red-and-black squares are grouped together in clusters throughout the blanket. I can see at least three clusters of red-and-black squares. There’s also a diagonal line of white-and-blue squares. I can’t decide whether I like these groupings or not…. I wonder whether this was intentional? What do you think?

No matter whether you like the placement of the squares or not, no-one can deny that Sheldon looks so sweet and comfy under his blanky. Covered with a granny square afghan is like getting a hug from, well, your granny. Got to love it!

Spring is here!

crochet, crochet bikini, crochet swimwear, free pattern

Greetings on this First Day of Spring for us Northen Hemisphere peeps.

I can really feel, and see, the change all around and I love it! It’s noticeabely lighter in the mornings when my alarm goes off, temperatures are much milder (13 degrees feels like a heatwave!) and daffodils, like these in our back garden, are all around.

I’m also seeing more summery clothes in the shops and online and a lot of these summery things include crochet.  These little numbers I found on Free People. I don’t have the guts to carry off a crocheted bikini or swimsuit, but man it looks good!!!

Who knew crochet could be this sexy?!

If you want to hook your own sexy little crochet number, Garnstudio has four free crochet bikini patterns.

I won’t be doing a blogpost showing you a crocheted bikini however. I think the closest I will get to crochet + beach, is sitting on the beach crocheting something, in my boardshorts and spaghetti strap t-shirt.  Not quite the same, but it’s close enough.

birdhouse, crochet, Terrific Tuesday

On a Monday I can still remember the fun I had over the weekend, Wednesday is the middle of the work week, on Thursday I start getting hopeful and on a Friday I can taste the weekend. But what about a Tuesday? It’s so…. just there. Weekend memories are too far away and the upcoming weekend might as well be a year away.

What we need is a bit of colourful inspiration to get us going on a Tuesday, don’t you think? A pretty picture, beautiful scenery or colourful imagery. Yup, that’ll liven up Tuesdays and turn it into a terrific day!

From now on I will go through my photos every Tuesday and find us a pretty picture to add colour and joy to the day.

xxxxxxx

Isn’t this the cutest little crochet bird house?  So colourful and cleverly made! It’s from teenyweenydesign.blogspot.com.

I hope you all have a terrific Tuesday! As I gave myself the day off work yesterday, today feels like a Monday but it’s Tuesday. Score!

Have a hooktastic day!

crochet, crochet applique, crochet pattern, Etsy

When I launched the pattern for my crochet wall clocks, I said that in stead of crocheted circles to indicate 12, 3, 6 and 9 you can use any applique motif, as long as the hands of your clock are able to move over it freely.  To quote myself:

I’m thinking stars, hearts, cupcakes.

The Gods of Crochet must have been reading my blog and sent inspirational hooky vibes to the owner of OneandTwoCompany. This young nurse is selling applique crochet patterns in her Etsy shop, which include exactly that: the most beautiful stars, hearts and cupcakes! Can you believe it?!

She also sells patterns for whales and hedgehogs that would work well with my clocks. I’m especially loving the hedgehogs!

Can you see it? A white clock face with a brightly coloured whales or hedgehogs (or both!) on 3, 6, 9 and 12?! It would be sooooo cute!

Ooh, and what about this scene. Absolutely perfect*!

OneandTwoCompany sells many other applique patterns, but I think only the ones I mention here, would work on my clocks seeing as they are flat enough.

PLEASE NOTE: I have to point out that her finished items (apart from the hearts pattern) are a bit big for the standard size clock, so you would have to:

  1. either keep going in pattern rounds for the clock face so that the clock is large enough to accommodate the applique; or
  2. use a 4 ply yarn and smaller hook for the applique.

Even if you haven’t bought my clock pattern, I’m sure you will find something to decorate with OneTwoCompany’s cute applique. Hats, scarfs, blankets, towels, cushions – just about anything!

The patterns start from as little as $2.50 (roughly £1.62) so what are you waiting for?  I certainly didn’t wait…. *I bought the cloud, tree & houses pattern. Not sure what I will be using it for yet, but inspiration will hit soon enough I’m sure.

Pattern stashing is like yarn stashing isn’t it? You know you love it, you know you have to buy it, and you know that you will (probably, eventually) find a use for it. Right?

What do you think of this?

Isn’t it divine?! The colours, the design, the tassels! This proves once again that you just can’t go wrong with a granny square. It also proves that guys can hook. Yup, the blanket was crocheted by a bloke: Matt of the blog AccordingToMatt.

AccordingToMatt is written by Matt Farci and Dennis Marquez of Hamburg, Germany. The two of them make the most beautiful things and the photos on their blog are absolutely gorgeous. In fact, it was through their Instagram photo feed that I found the blog.

It’s not all crochet though. Dennis has recently gone over to The Dark Side by venturing into the murky waters of knitting. Shock. Horror. However, he’s so good at it that even I will be following his progress.

I really love AccordingToMatt. Not because it’s two guys. No, it’s because the blog is written in such a nice, informal, chat-around-the-kitchentable style and their photos are stunning. Go have a look. There’s a link to AccordingToMatt on my blog roll on the right of this page. You won’t be sorry. Promise!

Fancy a cuppa?

crochet, Etsy, sugar syrup, teacup

I love this quote I saw on Pinterest the other day:

Where there’s tea, there’s hope.

I agree wholeheartedly! It’s a British thing, and it’s so true. A cuppa is my answer to any calamity. Coffee makes you buzz and edgy, but tea soothes and calms. Aaaahhhhh.

My go-to beverage when I’m crocheting, is then of course tea. Crocheting on the couch with a cup of tea works miracles! Imagine therefore my utter delight when I saw this crocheted teacup and saucer on Etsy! Isn’t it brilliant?!

Obviously it’s not made for drinking, but who cares? It’s genius and pretty and combines my two favourite things!

The maker of this beauty is whichgoose. Her Etsy shop is filled with other beautiful, whimsical items. To make this cup and saucer, I think she probably used a sugar syrup to wet the crochet and then draped it over a proper cup and saucer. I’ve tried this technique before with a fruit bowl and it works like a charm. It takes a while to dry completely and it is a bit, okay a lot, sticky but it works and it’s cheap.

The trick is that you have to use double the amount of sugar than water. So if you want 50ml of syrup, use 50ml water and 100ml sugar. Then just bring it to the boil and drop your crochet work into the syrup until it is soaked through. Pick it up with some sort of kitchen utensil (it’s extremely hot, so be careful) and try to press out as much of the syrup as possible, before draping it over your upturned bowl/cup/whatever. To make cleaning up easier for yourself, wrap the bowl/cup/whatever in cling film before draping the wet sugary crochet over. Then just wait a few days for it to dry. Easy peasy.

Look how clever the people at Urban Outfitters are with crochet shaped bowls.
Apples may be a bit tricky to get right, but if you crochet a doilie and drape it over a bowl, it can look like this. Very effective and unique. Give it a go!

Now for a cup of tea. Ten sugars or twelve?

You can’t get any more colourful than these fabulous striped leg warmers by Mademoiselle Mermaid.   They’ll cheer up any day! (If I had legs like this model I wouldn’t need any cheering up. Ever.)

A friend emailed me today with a photo of these most beautiful crocheted chandeliers for sale at  From The Heart Emporium (the South African version of Etsy). Isn’t it amaaaaaazing?!

The seller is called Living Life, and she has loads more crocheted (and non-crochet) items for sale, but I think nothing beats these chandeliers.

Anthropologie, crochet, Urban Outfitters

In an earlier post I mentioned Anthropologie to you. I said I would go have a look at their Christmas display window in Regent street and report back. Well, I did go. On the 27th of December. There was no Christmas display anymore. Just a big red “Sale” sign. Missed the boat on that one!

I did however go inside and sneekily took four photos.  A shop attendant was giving me very harsh looks so I could only sneak in four snaps.

When we were in Santa Monica in December I took some photos there as well. In the Santa Monica shop I photographed a beautiful blanket, or “Quirky Heirloom Throw” as they call it. It’s not strictly a crocheted blanket but it’s beautiful and would easily be able to recreate it in crochet. If not, buy it here.

I made a little slideshow for you of all the Anthropologie sneeky snaps. The first three photos are from the Santa Monica shop and the next four, the London shop.

Ooo, and before I forget, I also saw granny squares used as part of the shop display, and even part of the lighting installation, in Urban Outfitters in Santa Monica! Just love love love it! They’re the last two photos in the slideshow.
